How are you guys able to get NASLite to run on such low memory requirements?

Abit BE6 Rev 2 mobo
Pentium II 233 CPU
384MB RAM
Floppy
CD-R
Lexar JumpDrive 64

When I run NL I am getting:
Uncompressing NASLite Kernel...
OK, booting the kernel.
Uncompressing NASLite Kernel...

Out of memory

-- System halted

You likely have a bad SIMM/DIMM memory module.

Try removing all but one and booting, if it boots try the next. If it doesn't then you found your bad memory. Also just try reseating the memory.

Running NasLite USB 2.03

Intel D815EGEW desktop board
Intel Pentium III 1.2GHz
384MB PC-100 RAM
Intel Pro/1000 MT NIC
32MB San Disk USB Drive
300 Watt PSU

2 x 80GB Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8
1 x Western Digital 80GB
1 x Western Digital 250GB

Switch: Fiberdyne VS-G510 5-Port Gigabit Switch w/ SFP Slot

I can typically get 20-25% utilization over the gigabit network though a newtork share. FTP maxes out at a little over 33MB/sec. I am very pleased with these numbers.

NASLite 2.04 USB

Dell Optiplex Gn
233MHz Pentium w/MMX
64MB RAM
Promise Ultra100Tx2 Controller Card
45GB HD0 (UDMA 5) + 40GB HD1 (UDMA 4) (coming up: 2x 500GB PATA HDDs)
RealTek 8139-based no-name NIC (coming up: 3Com 3c905B)
Floppy kicker (iomega driver works great! Panasonic driver didn't work at all)
1GB Sony MicroVault Tiny USB drive

Running 6+MB/s read & writes with my fastest box (AthlonXP 2400, Asus A7N8x-e w/Gigabit LAN ), about 2.8MB/s with a 733MHz PIII desktop 10/100 NIC, about 2.6+MB/s with Dell Precision M70 (wireless-G, 54Mb/s). Numbers represent MAX speeds, with MIN speeds about .8MB/s lower.

OS: - naslite 2.06 USB
Bootdisk: 128M USB 1.1 Flash disk enabled for boot as USB-ZIP and detected as: Vendor: SHUTTLE Model: SFD-00128 Rev: 1.11 (free from work :-))
Drives: 2x500GB PATA Hitachi Deskstar (HW090) with low power mode enabled with hitachi feature tool, and noise reduction at maximum (£130 for both from http://www.bigmaggot.co.uk).
160GB Seagate PATA - free from a friend
80GB Samsung SATA - free from old gaming PC
Drive Rack: Coolermaster 4-in-3 Device Module (£13.07 including postage from http://www.cclonline.co.uk)
Mobo/CPU: VIA PC2500E 1500Mhz low power flex ATX (2 PCI + 2 SATA << needed this for expansion + 2 IDE) £53.25 + VAT - whatever I sell the old EPIA 5000 for!
Network Card: Intel Pro 1000 gigabit NIC (low profile version)
Gigabit Switch: Netgear Pro-safe 8 port gigabit switch (with CAT6 patch board + cables)
Memory 512MB DDR2 kingston £9
PSU: 250W Enermax
Case: iCute 9 bay tower case - £25 quid from maplin (they sent me 2 by mistake!!)
Performance
35.40MB per second roughly 10x faster than the old 100Meg setup, played a HD-DVD rip over the network without any issues at all - no more copying files to the media pc before playing anymore :-)
Drive Temperature
Moved into the loftspace, and since I'm in england, I get the following temps:
Disk-0 TEMP 18°C
Disk-1 TEMP 18°C
Disk-2 TEMP 19°C
Disk-3 TEMP 13°C
Hopefully, summer won't cook them, but I will be keeping a close eye on the temperatures if we ever get any sunshine!
Comments
Beats the 500G WD Netcenter which proved to be non-upgradeable, I'd planned on adding extra storage with the USB ports on the WD, but files I'd copied onto it and verified using killcopy just disappeared, so that was a bust.

Just waiting for my gigabit ethernet cards to turn up and then I will do another performance test!!!

NASLIte+
Old Cyrix 200 MMX
32Meg of RAM (will upgrade to 64M when I find it in my pile of old bits).
250G Seagate Baracuda

Was seamless to setup, works like a dream, managed to populate the server from my backups in half the time it took with the old FAT32/Win98SE solution I was using.

Well impressed.

Cyril

Hi,

I have the choice between the 3 systems below for a new NAS.
What would you recommend in terms of performance AND (!) power consumption?
The currently existing 3 PC in my home network have gigabit NICs, CAT5E or CAT6, the 10/100 3COM switch will be replaced in the future...

1.
CPU: Intel Celeron D 2.8 GHz
RAM: 512 MB DDR SDRAM DIMM 184-PIN
NIC: Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000MBit

2.
Mainboard: Asus P3B-F
CPU: Pentium III, 1 GHz, Slot 1
RAM: 1 GB
NIC: Intel Gigabit Ethernet

3.
CPU: 2x Intel Xeon 2.4 GHz.
RAM: 2 GB
NIC: Intel Pro 1000

Would #2 sufficient regarding the max possible performance for gigabit? I guess it would be at least the most economical, right?

New idea. What about:
4.
Intel i945GC/ICH7
CPU: Intel Atom 330

Everything onboard I need & low power consumption. What about speed? I guess it should be better than a Piii right?
Will such boards (incl. the onboard NIC) be supported in the next Version of M2?
