Has anyone had any luck/experience with the Asus P5K WS Core 2 Extreme motherboard? I'm mostly interested in the onboard Gigabit LAN. The LAN is Marvell 88E8052 + 88E8056 Gigabit Ethernet Controllers.

I have looked in the Hardware Reference Guide and no luck there. However, the ASUS M2N32 WS Pro uses the Marvell 88E1116 PHY for Gigabit LAN which people are using successfully.

So, anyone had any luck/experience?

Thanks for your help.

Looks like you're out of luck http://www.serverelements.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2055&p=11836&hilit=marvell#p11836

Argh... I just bought a DFI board that has two Marvell GB NICs onboard (88E8052 and 88E8053) and NasLite HDD 2.06 does not recognize either one... I thought these were popular enough to be supported.

Is buying another PCI GB NIC my only option?

Pity - i fancied changing to that board, might still as i have a supported gigabit card i could put in.

Thanks Willsy, I will be putting in a PCI Gigabit NIC card until the onboard one gets included. Not a huge problem, but would have been nice if they would have worked. Thanks for your help.

Now off to find a supported, relatively cheap NIC card.

I think the Netgear GA311 is the cheapest supported well known make. The Intel Pro/1000 is a good one, but about 5 times the cost. I had a few problems with the onboard GA311 on my last board not releasing a shared IRQ which was cured by fitting the Intel one, didn't cure all my problems which were down to a flaky board.
Hope you get sorted - it'll be worth it as Naslite is rock solid, most of the problems people have are down to dodgy hardware.

I bought a 3Com 3C996B-T PCI-X NIC off ebay for about £15 delivered. This has proven itself to be a solid performer and is supported by NASLite-2 v2.06 (beta revised kernel). It does take up a PCI-X slot, however if you're only using one of two (or more) for your RAID card....

Purchased the Intel PWLA8391GT PRO/1000 GT PCI Network Adapter

Willsy/NickC: I was looking at the Intel, Netgear and 3Com and they are pretty close in price. I've always had goog luck with Intel and would like to stick with it.

Thank you both for the info and help! :D

Thanks Willsy, I will do that. It should arrive on July 8 or 9. I'll let you know all of the ups and downs (hopefully not many downs).

Well, all of the pieces arrived safe and sound. I put it all together and had a few minor glitches in setting up the BIOS properly, but once I got it, it installed with NO problems at all! :D

This is what I have running:

1 - Startech RC4080S Rackmount Enclosure
8 - KINGWIN KF-811-BK DOCK Hot Swap Carrier
1 - BFG Tech 650W power supply
1 - Asus P5K WS motherboard
1 - Intel Celeron 420 (1.6GHz)
2 - 1GB RAM DIMMs
1 - Intel PRO/1000 GT Network Adapter
1 - Brand X PCI VGA Adapter
1 - LSI MegaRAID SATA 300-8XLP 8-Channel Low-Profile RAID Controller Card
8 - Samsung 750GB SATA hard drives (32MB buffer)
1 - 1GB CF (boot drive)

I also modified the Hot Swap carriers with a 1 green and 1 yellow LED. The LSI card has a header for individual drive activity (green LED) and a header for individual drive failures (yellow LED). They originally had just a power LED (green) and a fan failure LED (red). Now they have:

1 - Power LED (Green)
1 - Fan Failure LED (Red)
1 - Drive Activity LED (Green)
1 - Drive Failure LED (Yellow)

This way, I know at a glance if there are any problems with the drives.

Willsy: If you were on the fence about using this motherboard, go for it. Its great!

Ralph/Tony: Once again, GREAT PRODUCT!!!

Hi PaulT
Pleased you got everything up and running. I take it from your post that the onboard NIC wasn't recognised?
What problems did you have with the BIOS setup (for future reference) I'll probably look at getting a similar setup after my hols.

Hey Willsy,

No, the onboard NIC was not recognized.

On the motherboard, there is 1 IDE connector, 1 Floppy connector and 6 SATA connectors. I plugged the CDROM as the Secondary and the CF as the Primary into the IDE and it was recognized by the BIOS, but on NAS Lite it didn't recognize the CDROM as an ATAPI device. What I had to do was set up the SATA in Compatible mode and to emulate IDE. Next I connected the CF through a IDE to SATA converter in the 1st SATA Port and a SATA CDROM in the 2nd Port. This configuration took off and installed without a glitch.
