Heya, I bought NASlite HDD yesterday and installed it on my p3 600 mhz box. I have one PATA disk 20GB wich i used to install NASLite on and 2 SATA 1TB (using a IDE-SATA controller card) for storage.

The intallation program booted up fine from the cdrom, and it found all 3 drives including the network adapter. At my first bootup everything worked fine, the kernel loaded and I followed the instructions in the manual. After setting up the licence, network and admin password I saved and rebooted. As the first time it loaded perfectly. I made some network changes (like changing ip) and then I saved settings and rebooted.

This time the boot sequence froze after Verifying Licence [xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx] [DONE].
the underscore still flashed right under the Varifying licence line so i suppose it wasnt a total machinefreeze.
I tried to reebot a couple of times without any luck. When i reinstalled it booted fine the first time but as soon as i enter the licence and reboot it freezes. I tried to install on other drives with the same results.

Any ideas?

Paolo

The PSU output could be dropping off as it gets warmer (after being switched on for a while).

Firstly, I would suggest that you remove power and data cables from the two 1TB drives and reboot - to see if you can get past the freeze.

Secondly, if the first test proves to be successful, if you have the opportunity to try a higher output PSU I would suggest that.

My guess is that a NAS is more akin to a server rather than a home PC - in that the NAS, like the server, it is on all the time (in some cases - not in my house though). In this way, the requirements of a NAS PSU are more akin to those of a server PSU rather than a home PC PSU, i.e. 24 hour use, output stability at high operating temperatures, etc.

If you're looking for a recommendation as to which manufacturer to go for for a new PSU, I would recommend an Antec PSU - I've never been let down by one and 3 out of 4 PSU's at my home are Antec.

Thnx for your help.
I tried to disconnect as you said but it still freezes. I dont think its the PSU because it works fine before i enter the licens number, i tried to reboot w/o entering the license and then it gets past the "Verifying license" step in the boot sequence..

Other thoughts?

Go into the BIOS and turn off EVERYTHING not needed by the box. That is all the serial, parallel, sound, USB, etc. Also remove all the RAM but one stick and see if the problem then persists. Back to the basics.

Turn APM off in the BIOS. Also turn off ACPI while testing. You can turn it back on after resolving the trouble. Multiple NICs and shared IRQs can also turn your hair white. If all that fails, try another nic.
