Hi,

I have all my music on the NL box (yes, many have their movies, I prefer music ;) ) and am searching a "box/hardware" that will connect to the home lan (WiFi ou cable) and will let me read the music contents of the NL box on my HiFi. If I did not have to turn on my TV, it would be even better (maybe with a remote control that has a screen that shows the informations needed to select the songs)

What do you use / advise?

Best regards.

Hi,

I hope that it is a great system! The price they charge is very very high  Just 1 remote control is 400€ (around 600$ US!). 1 "transmitter", 1 "receiver" and 1 remote control costs 1000€ (1500$US) For less than the price of the remote control, I can build a computer dedicated just for streaming.

Thanks for the link anyway :D

I've been watching the netgear EVA8000 for a while (as it supports the FLAC audio codec) - someone on here recently indicated that it works fine wirelessly with his NASLite server. Should be able to purchase one for circa £200.

However, I've just gone before the Capital Expenditure Committee (Mrs.C) with the proposal of building a Media Center PC instead...... Wish me luck!

I've seen the NetGear eva8000 message on the forum too. I'll try to find one not too expensive...

Good luck with the ministry of fiance

You may take a look at http://www.slimdevices.com slimserver/slimdevices. I think the slimdevices are now a Logitech thing or at least they have something in common. It's with a remote controller with display etc. I believe they have the slimserver running, so you might also be able to control it via web interface, decide what song/playlist to be played on which device (or old pclaptop) around the house. Slimserver is free (last I checked). Devices cost something.

Thanks for the link. Really nice stuff there but it needs SlimServer running, thus no go with NL (unless a computer is running but I try to avoid that).

Cut & paste from their FAQ

Squeezebox
Transporter

In order to access your music files, the Squeezebox must connect to SlimServer, so SlimServer must be running somewhere. The short answer is no.

There are, however, some NAS devices that are known to be able to have SlimServer installed on them. Here's a list of NAS devices known to work with SlimServer with some more information on installing SlimServer on them:

* (Easy) Infrant ReadyNAS: Runs a custom operating system, but Infrant provides a SlimServer image that can be installed on the Infrant for SlimServer to run on the device.
* (Technical) Linksys NSLU2: Runs Linux, and can be complicated to install, but someone has written instructions about this on this web site.
* (Technical) Buffalo Linkstation and Terastation: Also runs Linux, and it's also complicated to install SlimServer. Instructions can be found on this web site.

For the moment, the only option seems to be Netgear EVA8000 (the EVA700 does NOT work with a NAS)

Regards

You could probably build a cheap Linux HTPC for nearly the same as you would spend on the Netgear EVA8000 - that's the logic I'm using with my current request for capex, although I'm going to put XP MCE 2005 on mine.
