Hi

I have an old 486DX4 with a NIC on the motherboard.

I have booted NASLite -SMB and configured the network IP address to 192.168.0.101, and set up the Server name and Workgroup name. I then saved the settings.

I cannot see the NAS Server on my network, nor can I ping it.

If I examine the boot messages on the screen of the 486 I see:-

Server - Launching Services
Ifconfig : eth0 : error fetching interface information : Device not found

Server - Network error
Ifconfig : eth0 : error fetching interface information : Device not found

To check the hardware I have booted Linux from Toms boot floppy http://www.toms.net/rb/ and set the IP address ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.101.

I can ping my XT box from the 486 and ping the 486 from my XT.

Using a different IP address makes no difference. It would seem that all is not well with NasLite!!

Is there any way to run ifconfig in NASLite?

BillP

I think the little red messages you have posted are pretty clear on what's up. I'm sure Naslite runs ifconfig by itself once it detects a NIC. First you need to get a PCI NIC that works with Naslite.

Easier said than done. My 486 only has 1 PCI slot and I want that for other purposes.

Other Linuxes access the NIC correctly (DSL and Toms boot disk), so why do I need to get another NIC? I think it is clear that the problem is in NASLIte.

Update: From a posting by dimension in another thread we have the solution:-

My NIC is on the motherboard, but as the MB has just a single ISA slot the NIC must be on the ISA bus. (Sorry I thought it was a PCI slot)

Naslite does not support ISA

So there we have it; Beware of the ISA trap!

My Thanks

From the naslite description on the website.

Quote:
Basic System Requirements

NASLite+ is a network file server, so a fast computer is usually not necessary.

Basic requirements are:

486DX or better processor
PCI bus
32M or more of RAM
1 to 4 IDE fixed disk drives
Bootable CD-ROM drive
Conventional floppy disk drive
PCI or on-board network interface adapter

Says right there PCI nic card required, hardly a trap. Gotta love people who don't want to read.
