I've read the documentation which lists the chipsets rather than the cards themselves. I did the search through the forum, and so far I was able to figure out that people are successfully using Netgear's GA311 in their gigabit setups.

If you are one of those people who's running NASLite+ with a gigabit card, please share which card you're using.

Thanks,

-- Alex

Here's mine that I'm using on NASLite-SMBG

Airnet AEG100
http://www.airnetusa.com/gigabit.html

Identified chip type is 'RTL-8169'.
RealTek RTL8169 Gigabit Ethernet at 0xd0800000, 00:06:4f:25:8e:4d, IRQ 10

I got a couple of them cheap with mail in rebates @ NewEgg.

I'm one of those using the GA311. Works great, and they're only about $20 at tigerdirect.com.

Thanks to those who replied. Looks like GA311 will be the card to go with when taking the gigabit plunge :)

my current NASLite v2 test box is running a GA311, I also have about 5 others in various machines in the network here. Fine card for the price.

I am currently running a Netgear GA621 card in my NASLite box, works great and loaded with no trouble at all.

In my Main PC I am using the onboard Gigabit, a 3com 3C940 chipset. Very fast and works great as well.

The drives a painfully slow now. Hurry up and finish 2.0 so I can go RAID5 already!!!

The Intel Pro/1000GT gigabit NIC (PWLA8391GT) does NOT work, despite the fact that Intel Pro/1000 is listed in the manual as a supported gigabit NIC. Apparently only the older MT version works....

I have found the Netgear GA311 to be very sensitive to cable quality -- much more so than the other gigabit NIC's I have tried. If you are more than a few feet from the switch, it will refuse to connect at 1Gb and drop back to 100Mb. That's even with high quality Cat 5e or longer Cat 6 patch cords. I tried a combination of multiple different cables, multiple PC's, and four different GA311's with similar results in each case.

I'm still trying to find a Gb NIC that will work with NASLite in the location I want to use, which is about 80 feet of Cat 5e solid conductor cable away from the Gb switch. Multiple laptops with built-in Gb LAN and other NIC's I have tried work fine at 1Gb, but the GA311 won't connect at 1Gb in that location. Right now I have NASLite+ USB running 1Gb using a GA311 connected to the switch with a 7-foot Cat 6 patch cord, but anything longer and it drops back to 100Mb.

That's a strange problem you talk of with the GA311. The card in my server is fibre based so there are no problems there. My computer is connected to the switch and there are no less then 5 connections between it and the switch. I get rocking speeds and some of the cables are even just CAT5.

I would be looking at the switch in the case you talk of since the GA311 can't be that bad a card. I have a 12 port Allied Telesyn gigabit switch, 10 copper and 2 GBIC ports. Everything I connect that can run Gigabit runs 1000Mb/sec speed. I also have a friend that has a 24 port Linksys Gigabit switch and he is having no problems running Gigabit and his runs are all CAT5 and over 100 feet with plugs and patches at both ends!

Some bargin network equipment isn't such a bargin.

I'd have to agree with mikeiver1 on the switch being the culprit regarding the GA311.

I have about 10 machines running that card in mostly linux and one windows box. I've seen the cable problem, but only with a cheap Netgear gig switch I use from my office to the data center. In the DC I have a Dell 5300 series switch and have never had any problems with the GA311 cards, even with questionable cables.

I'm using Netgear GS608 switches, which of course are consumer quality and not up to the standards of the Dell's. On the other hand, other NIC's seem to work fine with those switches.

I noticed when I bought lite+ a few weeks ago, it doesnt work with Dlink dge530t. I had to stick in a old 3com 10/100 & works like a charm.

Is there anything I can do to make the dge530t work with the current release. (a linux newbie)
