Make sure in the BIOS the disks are set to NONE or Not Installed.

Hello hopsing

Two possible causes I could think of ... but there may be other issues.

1] Look at http://www.maxtor.com/_files/maxtor/en_us/documentation/quick_specs/diamondmax_60_ultra_ata_100_quick_specs.pdf and make sure that your jumpers do not include a CLJ (Cylinder Limitation Jumper) situation.

OR

2] The drive may have been at one time formatted to a limit of 30 (or 32) GB using special overlay software. Although I may be wrong ... but I am not convinced that NASLite can properly override this limitation when you use "configure drives". I would suggest you get a utility (even from the Maxtor site: http://www.maxtor.com/portal/site/maxtor/menuitem.3c67e325e0a6b1f6294198b091346068/?channelpath=/en_us/Support/Software%20Downloads/View%20By%20Category/Desktop%20Storage/DiamondMax%20Family/Diagnostics&downloadID=113) that allows you to do a low-level format of the drive (losing all data on it) before you put it back in the NASLite box. You can stop the format after about 3-5% progress, as that would have wiped-out any overlay software, but if you're willing to wait, just go thru 100% of it.

Funny how you also have an IBM drive with similar symptoms. Were both drives used in the same computer before ? Are they now both on the same IDE connector ? What is your motherboard manufacturer and model ?

And make sure you use an 80-wire cable (see above Maxtor website reference.)

:) Georg

the problem is fixed:

as i installed these disks i controlled the boot messages from bios. the disks were not shown. so i changed the jumpers. unfortunatelly in the boot message the disks were anly shown with jumpers for
maxtor: CLJ = cylinder limitation
ibm: 32 GB which should be the same as cylinder limitation

then i done a configuration in the naslite menu without checking for bad blocks. after the reboot there was a stange situation. the full capacity was
shown on the disk button in naslite web menu but in the system it was still
shown as 32 GB. when i mapped it from windows it was also shown as 32 GB.
then i done i configrations with checking for bad blocks. this tooks very long time for each disk ( and this is the reason for my late answer ). but now the disks are shown with the full capacity.

the only open question for me is:

after configure the ibm disk i got the following messages:
LBAsect=70258337, sector=70258336
* Apr 2 18:52:37 NAS user.warn klogd: end_request: I/O error, dev 16:41 (hdd), sector 70258336
* Apr 2 19:27:51 NAS user.warn klogd: hdd: read_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error }
* Apr 2 19:27:51 NAS user.warn klogd: hdd: read_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError },

there were around 15 messages with different sectors. are these sectors marked as "do not use" or is it probably unsecure to save data on these disk?
