I'm new to the forum but not new to computing or NAS storage. I have the above mobo which has 2 IDE channels for a possible 8 drives, will boot from the flash drive without issues, and also has 4 SATA ports on it. This means I could put 12 total hard drives on this machine. It currently has a Sempron 2500 with 1 GB ram.

My questions:

8 drives, y or n?
SATA, y or n?
12 drives?

If not, will ver. 2 allow this? If so, I'm in and will certainly buy the USB capable version immediately. Are upgrades free? If so, for how long? If not, what's the upgrade cost?

Thank you for any and all input! Looks to be a GREAT asset with a lot of potential!

Hi Toyotadude,

Answers in order

No

No

and err No

However, Vers 2.0 is going to support SATA, not sure on the extra IDE channels, Tony might like to comment.

I have no idea how the upgrades will be managed, but I would imagine that as a Vers 1.* owner you would get a discount for Vers 2.0 but I don't think or IMHO agree that it should be a free upgrade from Vers 1.* as its a completely new product.
My advice is buy NASlite+ USB vers 1.5 and have a play with the software, you'll probably get a discount for vers 2.0 and you'll be well clued up when it comes to setting up those 12 drives
Good luck

Thank you Wilbur. Given what you've described I think the best option would be for me to wait until version 2 is out and see what supported devices are available in that. No sense in paying for this version when it will do only one third of what I am looking for. Currently FreeNAS does this without having to pay at all as they are open source GNU. The problem with them is there are no plans to make the product as robust as version 2 might be of this product. I'm hoping for the SATA but being able to use the 8 PATA drives at this point is more key for me.

I like where this product is going and will be watching for version 2 as it looks to be very promising!

Again, thanks!!

How do you figure you get 8 drives on 2 IDE channels? Each IDE channel only supports 2 drives (master and slave) so you could only get 4 drives on 2 IDE channels. Or am I missing something?

Each IDE channel has a primary and secondary that takes two drives each. This mobo has two channels or 4 IDE connections so it can handle 8 drives. It also has 4 SATA ports... I'm hoping to fill the whole thing with 12 drives, all 250 GB to make a 3 TB NAS. Nice board for this application if you can find one! Check it out at Gigabyte

So, how's version 2 coming along? :P

Thanks!
