I have an exiting 100 Mbps network in place. I use 10/100 switches on it (not hubs). And all machines are connected using 100Mbps.

I have tested network speed, with a few different programs, and also when copying larger files (like 2 to 6 GB) between machines and segments on the network. It appears I get a max of about 10MB/sec
so thats 80Mbps....transfer speeds. Which is of course fast enough for using my SageTV software for recording its TV shows across the network (to a DELL server Win2k now) and also playing back.

So the current network and DELL server seems to handle it all just fine. But I was excited to hear of your product and am definately going to buy the whole kit.

But I just want to get a feeling if it will work close to the performance level of my current file server.

It seems like it should work nicely. And be able to handle the video files being written to it from across the network (by the SageTV application)

What do you think?

Thanks. It looks like 7MB/sec, 9MB/sec at least.
Which is 56Mbps and 72Mbps

to me that seems plenty fast enough. I believe my SageTV is writing/using about 4 to 5 Mbps of network bandwidth when writing movies to the current file server.

So I would assume (correct me if I am wrong) but that means the hard drive cant be using any more than that. And should be more than capable of handling 4 to 5 Mbps writing speed. Thats not even 1 MB/sec.

So I am going to find my newest (old) PC, and use that as my file server. I want to make sure I have ata100 at least supported on the PC motherboard. Then I will turn it lose, and start testing it with SageTV. ANd take a careful look at the first 10 or15 shows it records, and see if there are any hiccups, pauses, etc in the recorded shows.

But it seems to me this should work nicely.

I will be very happy to have a non Microsoft OS running as the file server. AWESOME!!!!

Hi steingra,

A couple of things, Naslite floppy version is Free BUT does not run as fast as the retail version. Plus Naslite+ support GB networks so thats another route you could go. Naslite does not support SATA but V2 will!

I am sure naslite+ will suit your needs, Wilbur another member streams HDTV movies though his server and all is well.

The only problem you got is! what version do u go for. CD or USB?

leave that up to you

Well I guess as long as I have a PC that can boot from the USB stick, then I dont need a CDROM, and therefore, I could use all 4 IDE connections on the PC. right? I like that idea a lot.

I will have to read the instructions (more closely) on how to make the USB bootable "thing-a-ma-doobie"

I am buying the NASLite+ super duper package. Probably this weekend. Just need to dredge up the *right* PC from the graveyard of PC's in the dark corner of the basement.

PS Do you know if NASLite+ will suppott a dual CPU PII motherboard?

steingra,

Well luckly the USB version of Naslite+ comes with a Kicker floppy, this was designed to boot up the USB even if the motherboard dont have the abilty to boot from USB. its very succsessful at doing this.
you therefore get 4IDE connections.

to make the bootable USB flash you plug in the usb flash device boot the usb cd prepare the device one of two options, depends if you are using a kicker floppy. then either set the bios to boot from usb device if supported or boot from floppy (kicker) once booted you configure the system only a few settings to change, like ip, password, workgroup. then configure the drives reboot and there u have it.

if however u cant boot using the kicker you can try using a pci usb card.

the super duper package has the usb version (Boots from usb) , the Cd rom version (boots from Cd) and the server suite, this has the collection of floppys like ftp, smb smbg etc.

I have no idea what v2 will have, apart from what has been posted by the developers on this forum. But I personally dont think it will support dual cpus. the software only uses limited resources so the hardware has a easy time of performing fast so i dont think this will be a option?
but i could be proved wrong, we shall see.

NASLite doesn't support multiple cpu's, there's no performance gain at all.

Do you know if it will work on a machine that has two cpu's?
I have a motherboard used to be in a server, it has dual 350 cpus in it. As long as NASLite will work with it, I wont bother removing one of them. :) No use for the other one anywhere else.

Thanks
