NASLite Network Attached Storage

Just some low-cost, low-power, compact hardware I like. You may want to take a look at these if you are thinking of building a NASlite server from new components.

PC CHIPS M789CG Motherboard with CPU - retails for about $55US

Just a couple of quick notes about the PC CHIPS M789CG Motherboard with CPU that Tony recommended above...

The NASLite+ documentation recommends that you set the BIOS IDE fixed disk drive configuration for all IDE fixed disk drives to "NOT INSTALLED" in order to avoid boot problems. With the M789CG, I found that If I disabled the drives in BIOS, they showed up in NASLite+ as UDMA(33). If I enabled the drives in BIOS, they showed up as UDMA(133). Needless to say, I recommend enabling the drives in BIOS and turning 32Bit Mode on.

Additionally, I had trouble booting NASLite+ for USB Flash. After trying about 20 combinations I tried enabling the two options "USB Function for DOS" and "thumm Support For DOS" and the system booted just fine to a 1st Boot Device of "USB RMD-FDD".

I had previously planned on using the NASLite+ for USB Flash that I purchased on one of he NutShell Pro 1030N units. I had a lot of fun (and frustrations) working through some BIOS and hardware issues to get a 1030N up and running. I've decided to ditch the 250GB 1030N for a 1TB M789CG. I got almost a 4x performance improvement from the 1030N (drive index 3.873 kB/s) to the M789CG (drive index 14 MB/s).
