I set up a system, for testing & for real after testing, using a very old Motherboard Aopen AK33, with a AMD Duron CPU 800Mhz, a true Curb Side Orphan, with 3x128MB SDRAM PC133 memory. The Diskwriggler transfer rates are terrible.

The - my - question is, would 3x512MB SDRAM improve the throughput, or is the processor the bottleneck? And why. We always want to learn, to understand.....

It has been my experience in the past that most older AMD processor based motherboards performed poorly as a NAS box. There were a few AMD based systems that did perform very well, my K6-2 /300 with 256MB was one that did very well. It easily did 12MB/sec sustained.

The processor and the memory are more than up to the task. Check the IRQs and move the NIC to a different slot. The board just may not work for you, have had that happen a few times as well in the past.

:-) Just fiddled around with some obscure BIOS settings; box stays very quiet. When I have time I'll have to find the reset jumper on the board - LOL
