I just purchased new hardware along with the new Naslite M2 ver 1.63 to build a new more powerful server. Can anyone recommend a RAID card that is either PCIe 1X, PCIe 16X or PCI that will enable me to setup a RAID5 using either 4 1TB drives or 4 1.5TB drives. My data has exceed the 2TB limitations of my current 3Ware Escalade RAID card. As you can imagine, I am terrified of loosing data.

Appreciate any suggestions!

I use a 3Ware 9500S-4LP card which can handle 1.5TB drives. It is a PCI-X card but will work (albeit at reduced performance) in a PCI slot. 4 x 1.5TB drives gives approximately 4TiB in RAID5 and formatted using NASLite.

Thanks, I will look into that! I should have thought about this and planned the whole system before I purchased any hardware. I may just bite the bullet and get both the card and a new mother board with a PCI-X slot.

Very few if any consumer motherboards are going to be PCI-X. PCI-X is a server centric interface and so you will be looking for a server motherboard.

You want my advice, go on Ebay and look for a Rackable server. They have units that have 4 SATA drive bays as well as a SATA RAID card. Most have dual dual Intel Xeon or AMD Opteron processors and 2GB or more of REG ECC memory. The price is usually reasonable and the performance is rather good. I built a NAS based on one about a year ago and it got about 62MB/sec running four older Maxtor 250GB drives in RAID5. It had a 3Ware card, don't remember which one though.

Why reinvent the wheel is what I say.

You will likely be very happy with the unit. You will need an out of the way place for it though since they are a bit loud.

Just received an Opteron 250 based Rackable Server with 2GB DDR.

I put an *old* 80GB Maxtor drive in it for testing purposes and got the following (using M2x32 v1.62):

I get the feeling I'm limited by the HDD, so I'll try with a modern WD 640GB SATA-II drive and see what happens.

Very easy to set up, however I would recommend ear protection if you plan on staying anywhere near it - it's LOUD!

You should hear my Sun V20Z server, sounds like a gas turbine spinning. Glad it's in the basement in a rack.

Those are some good numbers you got running there. You should go with a RAID0 array and see where that gets you.

Yup - I can't say that you didn't tell me so.... :)

I can't stand any more of the noise tonight ;) , so I'll try to set up a RAID0 tomorrow night - although, I don't have a PCI-X riser (90°), so if I put the 9500S-4LP in the case it will all have to be open as the drive tray will not fit back down with the card in place.

With write speeds like that, my flabber is well and truly gasted!

I'm not really sure what's going on with the read speeds though - I would have thought that it would be quicker than that - it's barely changed regardless of which drive / RAID combination has been used.

Copied a 40GiB file to the server from a Windows 7 client and averaged 69.4MiB/s, then copied it back to the client from the server which averaged 91.7MiB/s.

Overall, well pleased so far - will try a RAID5 and see how well it performs - though that will not be tonight....
