The Intel D945GCLF2 uses Realtek 8111C. I also have an Intel D510MO that is said to use Realtek 8111DL. Not sure if the "L" changes anything. I may find some time late tonight or tomorow morning to boot the latter one ... but I would suspect that NL Core3 (the latest) would run fine.

EDIT: Notice this interesting set of lines from the D945GCLF2 SysLog. It's as if a R8169 driver gets loaded to make the 8111c work ...

Code:
Mar 12 00:44:52 [2] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
Mar 12 00:44:52 [2] r8169 0000:01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
Mar 12 00:44:52 [1] r8169 0000:01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 12 00:44:52 [2] r8169 0000:01:00.0: no MSI. Back to INTx.
Mar 12 00:44:52 [2] eth0: RTL8168c/8111c at 0xf80fa000, <xxx>, XID 3c4000c0 IRQ 16

But the Network Status page also mentions an 8168c ... (Some info redacted with <xxx>)

Code:
eth0: RTL8168c/8111c at 0xf80fa000, <xxx>, XID 3c4000c0 IRQ 16

Thanks, I would appreciate it..My wife doesn't let me keep all these systems around :)

i'm ready to get rid of this AMD machine and get up and running on the DG41RQ if it will work for gigabit.

Edit: George, do you see gigabit transfer rates using that board? or can you tell?

Will it matter much if I go with 667 vs 800 Mhz RAM in this board if I'm going with 2GB?

I don't think you'll see a price difference in the RAM (667 vs. 800). Faster is better, but I also don't think it will much of a large practical difference. Buying same price 800 future proofs you (a little). The only time there will be an additional gain in performance is using a dual-channel setup (if the board supports that), meaning 2x1GB would be fastedr than 1x2GB.

My performance numbers are from the D945GCLF2 with diskwriggler above, so YES, I get gigabit speeds.

It was 10 or 12 bucks on the 2GB of ram...not a lot but every little bit counts...I'll go for the 800.

My disk speeds are very slow though and I'm wondering if it's the 3Ware PCI Raid Card in combination with Raid 5 and IDE Drives..but things are very slow..

The write actually failed with the gigabit card but my numbers were

Netgear GIGABIT Card

Eliminate the RAID cards and any IRQ issues as a cause. Hopefully you have a spare drive laying around. Disconnect everyting else and try again with a single IDE or SATA HDD.

I might but all four 3.5" bays are all used up with my 500GB drives...I'll see if I can get one mounted in there and see...I am gonna be moving away from this setup anyway..I just know that Raid 5 isnt' all that fast with a smaller number of drives and I thought I remember reading that 3ware wasn't all that good for Raid 5 back when this card was made. I really need to get the new setup running...just gotta wait for the funds for the new raid card is all...

The fact is that RAID5 requires a very well endowed processor and XOR ASIC to make it reasonably fast. It requires a few I/Os per written block, this hurts the overall performance of the writes. It also requires that reads go through parity check before being put out. Most cards are not up to the task, only the best of the best are really even half way close to a RAID appliance. If you are looking for speed then RAID1 or RAID10 are your choice. RAID5, or better RAID6, with a hot spare is good for a bit of insurance for your data. Unless you have the money for the likes of say an EMC, Data Direct Networks, Hitachi Data system, or the like then performance is always going to be lacking.

That is one of the reasons I'm gonna switch to Raid 1+0 in my new set up. The data I "need" is backed up to 2 1.5TB External Drives that I swap out weekly. and the other data while a pain could be recreated if I absolutely had to.

I just gotta find a good deal on the 4 drive 3ware PCI Express Raid card now.

Ok .. tested the Intel D510MO. I should have STF (Search The Forum) first ... oh well. Someone else already reported success back in February here: D510MO

Using NASLite-2 v2.60 11-2009. The SysLog says:
Code:
Mar 18 01:56:43 [2] r8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver 2.3LK-NAPI loaded
Mar 18 01:56:43 [2] r8169 0000:01:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
Mar 18 01:56:43 [1] r8169 0000:01:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
Mar 18 01:56:43 [2] r8169 0000:01:00.0: no MSI. Back to INTx.
Mar 18 01:56:43 [2] eth0: RTL8168d/8111d at 0xf80da000, <xxx>, XID 281000c0 IRQ 16

Speed is 1000Mb/s. Diskwriggler on the same 500GB WesterDigital Green Drive as before:
Code:
diskwriggler -NTSC -C -t -n 5000 -o \\<ip>\Disk-0
Frame Resolution  : 720 x 486
Bytes / Pixel     : 2.00 (packed) (8 bit, 4:2:2 sampling)
Frame Size        : 699,840 bytes
File Type         : All frames in one container file (3,499,200,000 bytes).

Writing 5000 x 699840 byte frames into file \\<ip>\Disk-0/framestream.da
t
470 frames in 5.00 secs ==> 94.00 FPS (62.74 MB/s)

371 frames in 5.41 secs ==> 68.58 FPS (45.77 MB/s)
 82 frames in 0.83 secs ==> 98.79 FPS (65.94 MB/s)

Write Summary : 5000.00 frames in 70.92 secs

Thanks for the post...This makes me feel better about the other board. Appreciate the work.

Now I'm not sure about the Raid card. I was looking at the 9650SE-4LPML but read lots of reviews on New Egg about it being finicky with both motherboards and hard drives. So may have to extend my search for a good Raid card for 0+1.

Edit: I think i'm going to go the Adaptec 5405 route. It seems to be a much more accomodating card than the 3ware and people seem to like it. I need to make sure it's compatible with NL M2 however.

Well I went to buy the DG41RQ and some reviews at NewEgg said that 3rd Party raid cards wouldn't initialize. They suggested the DG43NB instead but it uses the 82567V from intel for it's gigabit LAN. I think I asked about it before but wasn't sure if it was supported and was a good chip for the LAN

Thanks,

Lance
