What about the Intel 82567LF chipset for the lan? The DG45ID board for example has a PCIe 16X and conventional PCI...Maybe that is a way to go? I have a DVI-D to 15 pin DSUB around here I'm sure. it's a bit more than I wanted to spend but $100 isn't all that terribly bad if it will run smoothly.

http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DG45ID/DG45ID-overview.htm

Edit:
Or even the DG43GT which has the 82567V LAN chipset from Intel. its' a bit cheaper than the other one.

I am happy with Intel Atom board D945GCLF2 (gigabit on board works fine) and have two SATA drives connected of the WD Green variety (500GB & 1TB). Total power draw 35watts at idle, which includes the small Mobo fan on the GPU, 1GB ram, and a large 120mm fan (with LED) to keep the two drives cool.

George,

Thanks, I had thought about this one but it only has the PCI slot and I thought it was recommended to find a PCIe slot for the raid card vs PCI to help speed it along.

otherwise I really like the atom boards.

What transfer speeds do you see?

The atom is just fine if you can live with the limited expansion of a single PCI slot. There are no vertical moves as far as arrays are concerned and so this would box him in to the as built state of the box and fair performance.

Given my choice I would go for the DG45ID/DG45ID and the reason is this. The Realtek chip is far more feature rich compared to the Intel chip of the cheaper board. The Intel chip doesn't support jumbo frames, the Realtek does. As NL progresses I would like to see that ability added, jumbo frame support, for faster payload delivery on the network. A 9K data packet is far more efficient at delivering large amounts of data than is a 1.5K packet. Since the vast majority of users I would guess are using these for streaming video....

It would be my guess that Intel looked at the cost of developing a NIC chip that did everything that the Realtek does and said to hell with that! Realtek has come a long way in the last 5 years. I have not been disappointed with the performance of their products of late.

Mike,

The DG45ID has 'Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbits/sec) LAN subsystem using the Intel® 82567LF Gigabit Ethernet Controller" as the controller.

Is this the board you meant?

Actually I was thinking of the DG41RQ.

Any of them should work just fine. Even if there is an issue with the on board NIC Tony and Ralph are pretty damn good about addressing and fixing the issues and updating the image.

Oh ok...well I may take a stab at it then. it's only 60 bucks at newegg for a new one. If the Gb would work on it that would be that much better but I could always put an Intel NIC in there since it has 2 PCI slots as well as the PCIe 16X slot...

Thanks,

Lance

Post performance when you have it.

Good luck!

Mike is, of course, right about some of the limitations of my board ... but for me it is working well, and I like the quiet & low power consumption.

Can't explain the large difference in Write speeds between the two drives (same generation and cache size), or the significant difference in read versus write (write is expected to be much faster due to cache on the HDD, but this is quite a margin):

Code:
Diskwriggler from Win7Pro64 to NASLite-2 v2.60 11-2009 running
on Intel D945GCLF2 (Atom 330/Gigabit) with 1GB RAM:

Increase the frame sizes to 5000. Right now you are getting the cache write influence.

The difference in the two drives..... Maybe an IRQ issue? Hell I don't know. :D

Not sure if I understand your comment ... frame NUMBER (currently 500) ... or frame SIZE (currently 7,776,000 bytes) ? Not sure how to change the frame size, other than the fact that I am using "-HD" ...

If I use a SMALLER number of frames (not generally a good idea to get a good AVERAGE of the performance) I get THIS interesting result for Disk-0:
Code:
diskWriggler.exe -HD -C -t -n 50 -o \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-0
Frame Resolution  : 1920 x 1080
Bytes / Pixel     : 3.75 (packed) (10 bit, 4:4:4 sampling)
Frame Size        : 7,776,000 bytes
File Type         : All frames in one container file (388,800,000 bytes).

Writing 50 x 7776000 byte frames into file \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-0/framestream.dat

 27 frames in 5.05 secs ==> 5.35 FPS (39.69 MB/s)
 23 frames in 3.82 secs ==> 6.02 FPS (44.68 MB/s)

Write Summary :   50.00 frames in 8.87 secs
              :    5.35(min)    5.64(avg)    6.02(max) FPS
              :   39.69(min)   41.83(avg)   44.68(max) MB/s

Reading 50 x 7776000 byte frames from file \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-0/framestream.dat

 45 frames in 5.03 secs ==> 8.94 FPS (66.32 MB/s)
  5 frames in 0.53 secs ==> 9.52 FPS (70.63 MB/s)

Read Summary :   50.00 frames in 5.56 secs
             :    8.94(min)    8.99(avg)    9.52(max) FPS
             :   66.32(min)   66.63(avg)   70.63(max) MB/s
In other words the read/write performance figures are now UPSIDE-DOWN !???

Sorry, I meant the number of frames. You were running it at 500, try it at 5000 and see what you end up getting then. The more frames you run the more of a real average you will get.

And soooo ... having that strange experience ... here's Disk-1 data:
Code:
X:\NAStest>diskWriggler.exe -HD -C -t -n 50 -o \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-1
Frame Resolution  : 1920 x 1080
Bytes / Pixel     : 3.75 (packed) (10 bit, 4:4:4 sampling)
Frame Size        : 7,776,000 bytes
File Type         : All frames in one container file (388,800,000 bytes).

Writing 50 x 7776000 byte frames into file \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-1/framestream.dat

 35 frames in 5.04 secs ==> 6.94 FPS (51.47 MB/s)
 15 frames in 1.74 secs ==> 8.62 FPS (63.93 MB/s)

Write Summary :   50.00 frames in 6.79 secs
              :    6.94(min)    7.37(avg)    8.62(max) FPS
              :   51.47(min)   54.65(avg)   63.93(max) MB/s

Reading 50 x 7776000 byte frames from file \\<naslite-IP>\Disk-1/framestream.dat

 45 frames in 5.03 secs ==> 8.95 FPS (66.38 MB/s)
  5 frames in 0.53 secs ==> 9.52 FPS (70.63 MB/s)

Read Summary :   50.00 frames in 5.56 secs
             :    8.95(min)    8.99(avg)    9.52(max) FPS
             :   66.38(min)   66.69(avg)   70.63(max) MB/s

And ... repeating with 5000 frames confirms results close to (on average) the original data with 500 frames. What gives ?

Strange, I have gotten fairly different averages when I changed the number of frames on my production system. Don't know, Tony, Ralph?

I'm running this diskwriggler with the Gigabit card and need to run it with the regular nic but the nubmers are very slow.

With regards to this DG41RQ board. Can I ping someone to see if the 8111D from Realtek would work or how difficult it would be to get a NL that did support it?
