Ralph points out in another thread that the EXT3 FS has a 16TB limit.

This brings up an interesting question. What about a RAID controller that is capable of scaling to well in excess of 100TB? Basically just throw a JBOD array at it and off you go. I can throw 1250 drives at the unit I have....Do the math.

I am wondering and kind of curious about what one would do in this situation. I mean, this is coming sooner than we think. With 2TB drives and controllers that will take in excess of 1000 drives. Storage is getting cheaper and cheaper by the day. Bluray is scaling to 70GB soon. Movie storage will take space to say the least. More if you want to have something like a kaleidoscape system. Where do we go, symlinks? It is one of the things that I am having to think about now. I am getting close to having the hardware I need to build my SAN back end. I guess what I am saying is that I can buy, assemble, and configure the parts but it would seem that the front end is lacking.

Ideas that do NOT involve Apple or MS DRM infected software?

Mike

ext4 supports volumes sizes up to 1 Exbibyte. So once we move to that format, it will be de pendant on hardware from there.

I think I got the hardware to make at least a dent in a Petabyte or two. Adding chassis as they come up on Ebay.

So when can we expect the move to EXT4?
