my network is all 100Mbps at the moment - router, a couple of switches and a couple of HP print servers - am looking at a new router - not desperatly fussed about gigabit but thats what it is so will have it

i dont [think] i need that speed but as it will be there would think about using it

its a 4 port plus input - so i will need one port to connect to 1st 8 port switch - leaving 3 spare ports - i have 2 Naslite boxes that i could add gigabit nics and one [main] PC that has a gigabit nic - i use this pc for control over the Naslite servers - so if i connect all 3 of those to the gigabit router would that part of the network run at gigabit speeds for transfering stuff to and from the nas boxes - or would everything revert to 100Mbps as that is also part of the system

assuming it would work as i hope whats a good gigabit network card - apart from that part of its spec i would want it to be able to accept WOL [wake on lan] as i use that to power up the servers when needed

The stuff on the Gigabit ports will run at gigabit speeds. They will not be dropped down to 100TX speeds except when communicating with those devices.

thanks Mike - i knew you would know - thats what i hoped would happen

and just to come back on the last question - a good gigabit nic that [hopefully] will be ok with WOL - seem to remember an Intel one is the card of choice from other posts

Not sure about the WOL cards specifically. I know that the older 3Com cards were good. I also know that the Intel cards for the servers are likely a good bet as well.
