I am considering purchasing NasLite-M2 and installing it on a MSI WindPC. I built the box a while ago and have been running a stripped down version of SuSE 11.1 as a NAS server. I would like to install NasLite-M2 then make the FS read only on a CF card. Is this doable? I can move the logs and conf files to an attached HD or pen drive. The goal is to minimize FS corruption on the OS after a power outage, and limit reads and writes from the CF card. Is this doable? Thanks for any suggestions.

After you install the OS to the storage boot medium it is not written again. Basically, it is read only by default and virtue of the fact that the OS boots out of the, CF in yours and my case, into a RAM drive created at boot by the boot loader. From that point forward, all writes and logs are written to the RAM drive. Nothing is written to the CF card unless you specifically tell it to write the configuration to it from a telnet session.

I use a CF card in an ATA adapter as the boot drive in my NL setup.

I have never had, nor can I remember ever reading about, FS corruption of a NL install. I have been running it for in excess of 5 years now. The only thing to EVER bring down my NL box has been a hardware failure.

It works fine as long as you don't try to hot plug it. You will have to install and then reboot to export the volume.
