Just a passing observation. My USB mount would not be successfully recognised by NL (M), so for no particular reason, I tried it via an un-powered Belkin 4-port bus and it then worked. I've repeated the test 4 or 5 times and it is consistent. Very odd; tried stick via an extension lead, just to verify that it was not a mechanical connect problem, but it was not. does anyone have any observations? It isn't a problem but I'm intrigued!

Not an expert here ... somewhat guessing. But there's something wrong electrically with your USB stick (capacitance, leakage current, etc) which is corrected by adding the extra electrical path in the Belkin.
Which makes you wonder ... how many of those USB sticks that NL won't boot off are just cheap sticks with a similar problem, not necessarily an issue with the motherboard ?? Hint .. hint. (Thanks for that.)

Been a long time since I read the USB white paper specs and implementation information but if I remember correct it might simply be due to poor power at the USB port on the MB. Is the belkin hub powered, IE: do you have a wall wart for it? If so then it is a power issue with the port and the power controller for that port on the MB. If not and you are just putting the hub in the chain then the issue is likely one of compliance between the individual implementations of the USB standard one one or both devices.
