Hey people,

I'm looking to go sata in my little nas box
IDE is slowly but surely fading out and I might be needing some additional storage soon

So I was thinking about these 2 routes
1. I found some realy cheap sata-IDE controllers
They are based on the VIA 6421A chipset
the Via 6420 and 6421 are supported according to the hardware reference manual (hrm)
Is it safe to assume the Via-6421A chipset is also supported?

2. I'm following some really nice Raidcards on eBay
the 3ware 8506-12 and the Intell SRCS16
the intell is supported according to the hrm
and for the 3Ware, all 7xxx/8xxx series are too, so I guess I'm set

Does anybody has any of these cards in use?
If so I'm interested how you like them, how difficult setting-up was, etc
As you can see in my sig. I have a LSI megaraid card in use
So I am familiar to using the webbios for setting up a raidcard
Nor am I affraid of flashing a firmeware onto a card

I do not want to get rid of the IDE raidcard soon, as it can hold up to 8 drives
and I have a backup in case it should die on me (yes I am paranoid)

Thanks everybody
Tim

I went route 2 (and I would guess that you probably will too....). My 8506-12 has performed flawlessly (as did its immediate predecessor my 8500-12) and was extremely easy to setup (and flash the firmware too). When migrating from the 8500 to the 8506 I merely had to move the drive cables over and the RAIDs were recognised immediately with no rebuilding or reconfiguring required.

Excellent news
If the price stays on the soft side, it will most likely be my next project

Anybody has thoughts on the Via-6421A chipset?

Went ahead and bought the cheap PCI-Sata controller
the 2 hardware raidcards went "a little" over budget

instead of the via chipset I got a Silicon Image 3114 chipset
I can confirm the manual that it works
I hooked up 1 sata drive and rebooted
the drive was instantly recognized and ready for formatting

The card has 4 sata ports and supposedly supports raid functionality
didn't have enough drives to test that though
at boot, there is a possibility to enter the cards bios, so that looks promising

I love it when it goes smooth like this
