I suppose I should have known better than to expect that it would be easy putting a PCI SATA adapter into an older motherboard. After failing with the Dell system, I tried installing the Promise TX4 into an ASUS P5A-B motherboard (old but reliable).

Although the Promise signs on, I've been unable to get it to detect the drive (detected fine on a SATA motherboard). I tried various ways to change the IRQ, but the results were the same.

So now I'm looking for recommendations for a PCI card. According to the place I checked last night, PCI adapters are less common now that SATA is available on many systems. This seems consistent with what I've seen from Best Buy. I'd like to buy from Frys (or someone else in the Seattle area with a decent return policy) since I have no idea if it will work. Frys has mainly SIIG cards, which I (mistakenly?) avoided. But these aren't included in the NASLite hardware reference list, so I'd appreciate learning of any experiences.

Meanwhile I bought a SATA - IDE bridge which works, but unfortunately I seem to be stuck with 135 Gigs. I hope this limit won't still exist when I get the new controller.

I have not had much luck finding a PCI SATA controller that works either. I settled with this Startech bridge which I was able to find at my local Micro Center : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6822998301 .
I have a 500 GB SATA drive hooked to it and it works fine.

That's good news, but maybe my problem is the BIOS.

I'm assuming that the performance would be slower through a bridge - maybe not.

The bridge I have sits on the back of the drive, not in the IDE socket. I think there are a number of different styles.

No need for the exact ref, but thanks. I decided to give up with NASLite. I concluded that I'd end up spending quite a bit on decent hardware, so instead of updating a PC I bought a Linksys NAS200 today which has been pretty easy to set up. It also has more user control. I'm now in process of moving all my files over.
