Having gone through the process of trying to find a motherboard with boot from USB support, I thought it would be a good idea to make a thread with a list of motherboards with a note wether or not they support USB boot.

Updated 7th of April 2008

ABIT AN8 32X - BIOS supports USB boot
ABIT KT7 - BIOS does not support USB boot
ABIT KT7A - BIOS does not support USB boot
ABIT KT7A-RAID - BIOS does not support USB boot
ASROCK all models - BIOS supports USB boot
ASUS A7N266-VM - BIOS does not support USB boot
ASUS A7N8X - BIOS supports USB boot
ASUS A7S8X-MX - BIOS supports USB boot
ASUS M2N32 WS Professional - BIOS supports USB boot
ASUS P4P800 - BIOS supports USB boot
BIOSTAR P4M80-M4 - BIOS supports USB boot
DELL DIMENSION 2400 - BIOS supports USB boot
DELL DIMENSION 4500 - BIOS does not support USB boot
ECS K7S5A - BIOS supports USB boot
Foxconn Mars - BIOS supports USB boot
GIGABYTE GA-865P-DS3 - BIOS supports USB boot
GIGABYTE GA-8PE800 Ultra - BIOS supports USB boot
GIGABYTE GA-K8NSC-939 - BIOS supports USB boot
Intel 845EBG2 - BIOS supports USB boot
MSI P35 Neo2-FR - BIOS supports USB boot
Shuttle FN41 - BIOS supports USB boot
Winfast (All models based on the NForce4 chipset) - BIOS supports USB boot

Gaiden has put up a webpage with floppy- and cd-kickers which can be used to boot boards that lack USB boot functionality.

Feel free to contribute to the list above!

ASUS A7N266-VM - does NOT support booting from USB Flash.

Otherwise a very nice microATX mobo with integrated NIC + gfx, especially for low end Socket A CPUs (using a TDP ~20W AMD Duron 600 MHz myself).

using "superfloppy" usb format, & ensure BIOS "enable usb in DOS" is set.

any info on asus p4s800d-x?

doesn't seem to boot usb disk, even after changing seagate usb st3200 to the "first hard drive" and making it the highest "boot device priority."
I wonder if the internal sata drive (st3800) needs to be disconnected or disabled first?

PS: this link seems to be dead <http://homepage.ntlworld.com/lou.greyfaulk/tools.htm>
which is "cd-kickers" in the first entry of this thread: "Gaiden has put up a webpage with floppy- and cd-kickers which can be used to boot boards that lack USB boot functionality."

I don't believe "first hard drive" applies to USB devices. You need to activate usb booting in bios and make sure your USB hard drive is bootable, ie has a bootsector etc. As for the broken link, thanks for the heads up! I've updated the link even though gaiden has sorted with a redirect from the old url.

timlevin,

Once you have programed your usb device, go to the bios and make it the first to boot, on my Asus MB my usb pen is seen as a Hard Drive.

superboss thanks for sorting the link out..

Packard Bell 3DFX PC with Bora Pro MB, + P3 in Slot 1, does NOT support USB Booting but works with Superfloppy kicker.

I believe that partitioned Flash USB sticks for password or 'B' Drive, do not work.
