Hi,

So naslite looks really nice, pretty much exactly what I want. However, I see that a lot of you are using older hardware, but I don't really have anything laying around that would be suitable. Therefore, I want to throw together a cheap system. Can anyone recommend a motherboard that would be compatible (working lan, sata controller, etc), that I can purchase online (newegg, etc). The only real constraint is that it needs 4 sata ports (as I have 4x500gb sata drives I'd like to use), and I guess I'd prefer an onboard video to save money (but I'm flexible about that). I don't really have any brand/cpu preferences/etc.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Hi Dave,

have you thought about checking out ebay for a board that has ram cpu and onboard gfx and buying a new SATA card? this maybe a cheaper option?

I'd rather not deal with used hardware, I'm not that strapped for cash, just want to keep it in the ~500 range, without drives.

If you have that sort of cash, why not consider cheaper motherboard and add a hardware RAID card - you'll probably want RAID functionality and this is the only way to go about it. My Gigabyte board is reasonably specced - 939, 2 x IDE, 2 x SATA - and I'm just about to add a RAID controller or two to it.

Remember to buy a *decent* PSU - you don't want it going <snap, crackle, pop> at any time and taking your data with it......

In terms of case, I would suggest the largest volume you can fit in the location you intend to put it - free volume, good spacing and lots of fans make for happy HDD's.

I had to import my YY-0221B from Germany but it's got all the space I could conceivably require and space for 14 HDD's stock, could be upped to 18 at a push with a couple of aftermarket off the shelf parts.

Have fun!
