Hi!

Does anyone (UK) know if this card (Circa £27) sold by MAPLIN (UK) is supported??

2 Port ATA-133 PCI RAID Card

Internal 32 Bit PCI RAID card
Provides 2 ATA-133 ports
Supports up to 4 IDE devices
2 independent IDE/ATA channels

Alternatively, any recommendations??

Thanks jeffjohn

I would go into Maplin with a copy of the Hardare Reference document and check that the chipset on the card is listed under Hardware Raid - if not, it won't work in RAID.

I've been toying with the idea of hardware RAID, but there does not seem to be a card available less than about £150.

It's most likely a software RAID card which is not supported.

Hardware RAID cards, say 4 ports, can be found on ebay for as little as £50.

I got myself a used Adaptec 2400A for that much. You just need to monitor ebay every couple of days to see if one is put up.

At the risk of restarting the debate over RAID cards that I generated some months ago :P , is buying a second hand card on eBay a sensible way to secure one's data? If anything goes wrong with it it could be very difficult, not to say expensive, to find an identical replacement that will enable the data to be recovered.

Surely there are, for instance, plenty of Dell branded Adaptec 2610SA's floating about? Furthermore, when your retail RAID card is out of warranty, what then? You still have to get one the same......

On another note, ebay.com has about 15 Adaptec 2610SA's in one auction for $109.98 + $12.95 (to UK) shipping. Nice high feedback rating on the seller too..... Just bought one - too good an opportunity to miss.

That's why you back up data

And in the case of RAID-1 you dont even need a raid card to rescue the data. Simply plug in the working drive and voila!

I could be wrong, but I believe that depends on the RAID card
