I'm having a mess of a time finding/deciding on a SATA RAID/non-RAID controller. Since there's limited support for sata devices in the 2.4 kernel, I was wondering if anyone has tried building up a 2.6 kernel to see if NAS2 will run with it.

If anyone has a suggestion, I'm looking for a SATA2 controller that will work in a 32-bit PCI slot. RAID/non-RAID....I don't even care at this point.

If it's questionable, I may just end up buying a version and trying to see if I can get things working with 2.6
Otherwise, it would be nice to see some backported device driver support put into the 2.4 kernel. BTW....what build of 2.4 is NAS2 using?

Before you go gung-ho on recompiling a kernel take a look at the Naslite 2 Hardware Guide first dude. There are plenty of supported devices with the stock kernel. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that suits you.

I've been all through the guide.
Best I can tell, there are no supported SATAII controllers...only SATAI

Not a huge deal breaker...it's just that I just now realizing this.
As for configuring and recompiling a kernel, no big deal...especially if it gets me from here to there

Issue now is that if I'm going to spend anywhere close to $75 on a SATA controller card, then I'm thinking I may want to instead just buy a new m/b with SATA support built-on.

decisions...decisions. I really just want to hurry up and get this box built.

It's a network server dude. SATAII would be waiting on your nic. SATA should be good enough for gig-e.

Totally understand. I had just initially begun looking for a SATAII controller, which would be a logical thing to do, right?
....and now that I see that this isn't going to happen, I'll be looking for a good SATAI controller. :)
If there IS a SATAII model out there, then why spend the money on a SATAI (granted that the price difference isn't that great).

I'll likely still much around with the kernel....just to see if I can get 2.6 running
