My old (Compaq 5736) MB seems to not have an onboard speaker, and the documentation doesn't show where to connect one (this is the speaker for the POST test I'm referring to ... the one that NASLite uses for audible feedback for impending HD destruction :)).

The question I have is, is the onboard audio chipset supported in NASLite? Or, another way of asking is, what is the best way for me to find about about SMART issues (short of logging in regularly to my NAS box).

One cool upgrade would be to have an internal mailer which can email me in the event of problems.

TIA

Hi,

If you take a close look on the MB you will see a bunch of cables running from the Case to the MB, amongst the wires are pins the speaker usually plugs in here, and is often there are markings on the MB to say what each pin does, I tried looking for a PDF manual on your board but could not find one to see for myself, have you got one?

In my old Compaq there was no speaker at all. Once I rigged one up with a proper connector I still had no sound. Turned out there was a setting in the BIOS that had to be toggled.

Good suggestion - I'll open the case later and look more thoroughly at the MB case harness, and post back with my findings.

Replying back: There were 2 open pins on the MB-case harness, but alas, they are apparently not for the speaker (no AC voltage at all on these pins during boot-up - I didn't have a high impedance speaker to connect between these pins and didn't want to risk damaging the MB with a low impedance speaker, so I used a DVM).

There are no speaker markings anywhere else on the MB. Since the MB is a Compaq-specific custom job, I wouldn't doubt that there are no speaker provisions.

BIOS is extremely rudimentary and has no speaker settings (and hardly any other settings at all), as suggested by azjerry. There is no documentation available for the MB at all. There are only 2 or 3 references I can find when I submit the various bar code lables, etc, on google; they were other 5736 owners looking for MB documentation or selling their MB on ebay!

Looks like the only way I will know if the HD's are about to fail is to a) listen for bad HD sounds - which will be difficult since my NAS box is tucked into an out of the way location in my basement), and b) periodically check the SMART status manually. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
