Hi All.

I have been scanning these pages for a while and doing some research on NAS devices, servers and the like.
I have a few requirements that I would appreciate some help with....

I need to serve up AV files to devices around a home.
I need to run software on the unit to act as a server for audio files.
I need redundant drive storage for security.
The unit will be always on, hopefully powering up drives as neccasary.
It will need to be used with a UPS and be able to shut down from the UPS.
Hot-swapping of drives would be nice from caddies on the front.
Rack mount case would be very useful.

I am fairly handy with networks, admin of my own machines and custom AV in general. I think I can build and configure one of these chaps but could use some help speccing the components required for reliable and repeatable use.

What do you think??

Many thanks in advance.

if you need to run software on the NASlite box then its highly likely you would be far beter just using your fav flavour of Linux.

NASlite is sooooooo stripped down even compiling would be a job lol

Thanks for the tip fat but I wouldn't know where to start with linux let alone use my favourite flavour or compile.

If I'm going to need detailed linux knowledge then I'm likely to struggle a bit and could do with being told so I think.

If NASlite is not the way to go then does anyone have any alternative ideas?

I assume that NASlite is just a very basic software package? Might there be a better alternative?

stereoguy823,

I wouldnt give up on Naslite yet, if I was you i'd download the floppy version and fire it up, its free and will give you a idea of what naslite is about, the floppy version has its limitations due to what can fit on the disk.
then have a good read on the Nas2 manual and see the extras it has.
