I'm assuming you get the message from the logs via HTTP interface. Does the HTTP interface work when the NAS is hanging?
Can you ping the NAS box when you get the messages?
Does a directly attached monitor/keyboard let you log in?

Is there anyway I can make the machine do a proper shutdown if it crashes, as it takes for ever to boot back up again.
If it's truely crashed your only option is to do a reset. If it's just a network problem you will be able to log in using a directly attached monitor/keyboard.
If the system has done this multiple times I would recomend you back up what ever is stored on the system. Your hard drive may be dying or something on the motherboard may be going bad.
If HTTP, ping, and telnet are not working when it crashes you may have a bad network card or cable. Or you could have another computer on the network being given the same IP as the NAS box.
