Really strange issue here with NasLite+ for USB. It seems to have gone away!

Here is the problem/sitution.

Set up a server to transfer some files, all worked well. Booted multiple times from the USB, changed disks, botted again, etc.etc. All is well.

Shut the system down for several days, load new disks, fire it up and .... nothing, nada, just a long wait on boot.

The initial sys info command line comes up,
then the logo screen,
then the info bar and the word "Loading"
but after that, NOTHING.

Just the USB activity LED comes on and stays on.

Thinking the disks were doing something, I waited an hour, with no results.

The sysem finds all the newly installed disks (4 x 320 GB units), I checked the USB on an XP sysetm and the files seem there, plus it was shut down normally last time.

So .... am I hosed, can I get the data back, I'm really surprised since it seemed rock solid up to now.

Help will be appreciated!

Thanks,
... Mike ...

Your data is still on the disks, so yes you can get it back.

A couple of things to try:
- Try a different USB port on the NASLite+ computer. Maybe the one you've been using has gone bad or has dirty contacts.

- Try loading NASLite+ on a different USB key and see if you can boot from it.

From your description it sounds like it's part way into loading the kernel when the USB port/key run into some sort of problem it can't recover from. Has any of the hardware changed besides the disks? Are there other things plugged into USB ports that may be interferring? Have any BIOS settings been changed?

If you remove the disks and put the "old" ones back will it boot?

OK .... now it's fixed .. but I'm still perplexed.

Burned another load CD (shop ate the last one), booted it, loaded the USB stick and configured the system. System spun up and found the disks.

I tried it on the same and different ports when it failed, it seemed to be the USB stick. Reloading it solved the problem.

If I did not know better, it appears that after being out of the system for a while the USB just dropped some bits. Typically a good stick should hold the data for more than a week out of the system!

Anyhow ... NasLite seems to do a good job ... found the disks and data is now transferring.

Very weird ....
