Hiya,

No matter the size of the large file, if its greater than 100 meg, the NASLite server locks up, completely.

I have to press the reset button and wait 20 minutes while it checks the disks.

It only sometimes does this and I have no idea what the cause is... Uploading/downloading small files is fine. Downloading large files is fine, its just when it comes to uploading and it may happen once every two days, or three times in a row, its random.

Both FTP and Samba transfer causes the lockups? As I cant see what is happening in the server log I cant find out the problem, anyone have any ideas ?

System Spec:

ABIT KT7A motherboard
Duron 800 (8x100) CPU
1x 256, 1x 128 PC133 memory (passed memtest86+ )
1x 52x CDROM (Disk-1)
2x Samsung Spinpoint SP2014N 200GB hard disks (Disk-2 and Disk-3)
1x Maxtor 160GB (Disk-4)
1x 3COM Fast Etherlink XL PCI (3c905b-tx)

If the system locks up without any messages or a dump, then the cause is most likely hardware related. There are many potential causes for this type of behavior, ranging from a power supply to inadequate cooling. It’s difficult to say for sure so some experimentation will be necessary.

My first guess would be RAM, but memtest86+ would have likely tripped on something if there was a faulty block. If you have any available, I’d still try different RAM or bump up the RAM waitstate in the BIOS to slow things down. If the RAM checks out then the next place I’d look at are items like IRQs, specifically the NIC and IDE.

Does it only crash when writing to one of the disks or does it crash when writing to any of them?

If you have a monitor attached, does it show any kernel panic message or other error message?

Is the computer overclocked?

My first guess is that it's a memory issue. Just guessing here, but maybe when the file crosses from one memory module to the other it causes a problem.

I would try taking out one of the memory modules and then do some big writes to see if it still locks up. If so, I would take out the other memory module and put back the first one and repeat the test. This would eliminate a memory glitch as the problem.

Next I would try removing all but the CD and one disk, testing, and then adding one more drive, testing, etc. to see if the problem shows up when a certain drive is added. This would tell you if one of your IDE channels is messed up, or if a particular disk drive may have jumper settings wrong.

If none of these fixed the problem I would see if lowering the CPU speed helps.

I'm not a linux guru so I don't know if there's a linux equivalent of Windows ctrl-alt-del to break out of a lockup condition to a low level command prompt. If there is, you may be able to get more information on where in the code it's having a problem.

I think I found the problem, it was one of the member slots on the motherboard was a bit twitchy, its a 6+ year old motherboard so.

What I have done now is moved the network card down a PCI slot, and replaced all the memory with 2x 256MB Kingston ECC memory, in the slots that work 100%, and I belive it has fixed the problem.
