I just got my new Duron based NASLite+ box up and running and guess what?

it can mount the drives which my old box refused to talk to!!!

There is clearly something about my old box which NASLite doesn't like

AMD-K6 on unbranded i430TX based mobo
32megs EDO RAM

sound familiar to any of you others who were having similar problems?

OK looks like my initial jubilation was somewhat too quick, she still doesn't like talking to the Maxtor drive. Both the 160GB Baracuda's are fine though.

I've now re-formated the Maxtor and I'm going to do some tests.

the problem is partly, but not completly, solved.

Seagate drives do not require a re-format after incorrect shutdown in the new box, but the Maxtor still does.

I give up, that drive is a liability. It's coming out.

I'll put it in my Windows box which seems to be more forgiving and have one of my old 80G 'Cuddas in the Naslite.
