the saga of my hard drive woes continues

I am trying to build another NASlite+ box incase it is something to do with my old K6 that doesn't like modern drives.

So I've got myself a Duron 800 with a Gigabyte mobo (Via KT133a set). I've trasfered the NAS+ CD and floppy from my old naslite+ box, and it wont boot, can't recognise the floppy.

OK, I'll just re-enter the settings and make a new floppy

login: admin
password: nas

incorrect login.

checked caps, shift, numlock etc,

incorrect login.

But wait, the floppy isn't supposed to be in the drive for first boot is it? so I took the floppy out and rebooted.

incorrect login.

So I checked out the forums and found an old thread where it had been a dud floppy drive causing this. Swapped out the floppy drive for the one from my old NAS box.

incorrect login.

I have now officially run out of ideas. The login is correct, the floppy drive works fine (AFAIK BOTH floppys work fine) the CDROM worked in the old box and the new donor machine works great under SuSE 10. Any suggestions?

Is the floppy type set correctly in the BIOS? Can you boot a floppy?

and heres one more lesson in "check everything, even if it can't possibly be wrong"

the floppy cable wasn't properly plugged in at the motherboard end. Must have snagged it when I was re-configuring the machine.

thanks for the quick reply Tony

Hi mongoose,

I think we have all done something like that. its easy to get blinkered and miss the problem, So you going to submit another NAS pic to the hall of fame? someone has to have a better case then Wilbur!

Tony....comon show us what you got... No excuses now.. ;-)

hey Edeng, yeah I'll probably update my pic, but I fear I can't come close to Wilbur's case. She's just an old AOpen jobbie with the blue stripe down one side, looks better than my old NAS but no competition to Wilbur!

undd3rrated,

The only time I ran into this problem was when I had the floppy drive configured incorrectly. In mongoose's cases, the floppy cable got loose. In my case, I had the floppy cable reversed when being plugged in to the floppy drive. I believe that the floppy drive's light is on when this happens. I must not have paid attention at first.

In any event, I'd suggest you double check your floppy drive connections, and as one of the suggestions said, tried to boot off the floppy.

Hope that works for you.
