If I make this upgrade to gain better network speed, am I going to lose all data stored on my hard drives so far?

Is it in effect a brand-new (blank) Server?

The short answer is no. The hardrives in your nas have been formated to Ext2 or something along those lines by your version of naslite already and are compatable with all other versions of naslite.

The server does not run on the hardrives but in ram and is instigated from floppy, cd or usb. The os is not run from the hardrive. In theory (and practice) you could take you current hardrives and install them on any linux system (and with the installation of a specific driver, you can install them into windows) and the data would be accessable.

No doubt someone will jump in if Im wrong..

Adrian is right. The only thing he left out is that your drives won't show up with the purchased version until you put in your serial number and then reboot. The first screen that comes up will have an option to enter your serial number. Then you will also have to set up your network interface again since that information was stored on the old "free NASLite" floppy.

After that it will look just like the free version, only faster
