Tony, you may be the only one who can answer this ... if you have followed the saga of the HD installation woes of the errant WD 160gb drives, 1 is now Ext2 formatted and in operation in my NASLite Server. However I see these messages in examining the "Disk-2" log:
---
SMART Self-test log, version number 1
Num Test_Description Status Remaining LifeTime(hours) LBA_of_first_error
# 1 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 90% 679 0x1280003f
# 2 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 90% 674 0x1280003f
# 3 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 90% 674 0x1280003f
# 4 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 10% 673 0x127d7055
# 5 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 90% 197 0x00000003
# 6 Extended off-line Completed: read failure 90% 197 0x00000003
---
I'm no Linux guy (Windows please), but "read failure" can't be a desired condition in any system. I suspect this drive is not going to enjoy a permanent stay in the server. Please advise.
Thank you.

Hi Grumpa,

Look further up in the log and you may see this as well.

"Self-test execution status: ( 121) The previous self-test completed having
the read element of the test failed."

So that in conjunction with what you posted might very well suggest that that drive is on the fritz. One of my drives says the same as yours so I dont trust anything of significance to it. I know it will fail eventually so I really on just leave it in at present to see how long it will last.

But I would also appreciate someone decyphering the log you posted so I better understand the health of my system.

Hello Grumpa,

The SMART tests are internal to the drive, so if there are problems during an internal test, then the drive is going bad or the firmware has issues. If the drive is older, then I'd probably not use it for anything important since as Adrian mentioned, the drive will fail sooner rather than later.

If however you are holding a newer drive, then I'd contact the manufactirer and ask for some assistance.

Hope that helps.

Tony: Thanks for the clarification about NASLite vs. SMART tests.
Adrian: The drive will not enjoy life as a NASLite server drive. But I have to know about the problem. What makes it worse is I have run Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics, and they report; "SMART: All Tests Pass". I've bit the bullet and launched their Extended Diagnostics (good), but it will take 8+ hours to run (bad). I'll try to close out this series of posts after I get the results ... see you all 8 hours from now.
Thanks again to all for the information and help.

The WD 160gb drive has a bi-polar personality. 8.5 hours of Western Digital diagnostics showed bad sectors, and reports they could not be repaired. Yet Windows XP formats (long version) the drive as NTFS, and after Error Checking, CHKDSK show no sector problems. So, this bad boy in never going to see the inside of my NASLite server again ... and now lives happily an external USB drive. I still don't know if it has problems or not ... but the safe assumption is, it does.
