Just purchased the usb version of NasLite+.
Great piece of software!!! Works fairly well.
I have a old motherboard with USB that won't support USB boot and the Kicker disk worked perfectly!!
I found an old 32MB USB key, I was not using anymore.
I had a bit of a problem creating the USB superfloppy, I think you can only have one CDrom installed on the system, your creating the superfloppy on... As it kept saying it could not mount the cd, until I switched to a single CD system.

Couple of questions though....

1.) The naslite webpage for the mounted hard drive shows UDMA66, My motherboard is a ATA100 (VIA KT133a chipset), and my hard drive is a ATA100 seagate 250GB. Does UDMA66 mean my hardrive is running at ATA66??? Or is UDMA and ATA just different specs??

2.) When I tried to stream a DIVX file to a different PC, it would play fine unless you paused it, and pressed play again.
The video would be choppy, and I could hear the NAS hard disk seeking continuously.
Could this be a function of not enough RAM?? (I have 128MB PC100 SDRAM) Slow Hard disk speed?? Network speed??
Any suggestions??

3.) Can the USB key be removed once the machine is running??

4.) One feature I would like to see is a scheduled shutdown option.
Then I could run my NAS on a timer and only have it going when I am home.

Thanks
Randy

Something new to add about the DIVX streaming.
If I open the DIVX player and connect via SMB (windows share) it is choppy.
If I connect via HTTP it is fine.
I also tried a MPEG2 and it works fine with both SMB and HTTP connections from the DIVX player.

More testing to do, I guess.

Thanks edeng, I have a Compaq motherboard so the BIOS settings are not "Normal AWARD/AMI style bios settings"
But I tried my best to disable everything.

New info on Divx playback.... It may be some issue with the DIVX player.
As I can play the Divx file perfectly from Windows media player.
(Buffer settings??)
BUT.... I setup another computer (Newer P1.4 laptop--udma100 shows up on naslite webpage) all was fine!!!
I checked the chipset on my motherboard again.
And I have a ATA66 southbridge chip, so no ata100.
(VIA 82c686a southbridge)
My motherboard??? Bios settings??? Just don't know for sure.
But it seems to point to the UDMA66 not being fast enough with NASlite for the DIVX player. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
I'll try and find a new ATA100 motherboard off Ebay sooner or later.

I'll keep my testing results posted

gshock999,

So when you are watching a dvix from the nas using your Divx player its choppy? and when you view a divx from the nas using Media player its ok?
is this right.

Using udma100 will speed things up. I stream Divx and dvd files to my xbox and they are fine. using 256mb ram 800mhz cpu and udma100.

Before you look at a new MB try a few divx players.

Hi edeng, you are correct. with you question.

I have a Athlon 900, 128mb ram, 250gb seagate (ata100), and UDMA66.
The laptop test seems to point to the udma 100 being the cause.
I can stream the same DIVX movie to two diffrent computers, using media player without a problem.
Winamp just locksup.
BTW, I am using DIVX6.
I am okay using windows media player.

I might post a questions asking what is the favorite/best player used with NASlite for serving media files. Video, music, photos.... etc.

I bought NASlite because I just built a PVR/DVR. And all my recorded content adds up so quickly.

Thanks

gshock999,

I use winamp when I steam Divx to my pc, never really had a problem with it, have you tried uninstalling and re installing. could be a codec problem. I also use power dvd also runs fine, and when I feel like it Media player.

I can stream a movie to my xbox and also transfer a 4GB file to my nas and i dont get any stutter.

Going to update my network from 100 to 1000 in the next few weeks, should speed things up even more.

In answer to your question to best player for serving media etc. i say a chipped xbox, yes its hardware but its all there and plugs straight in to the tv, it will play all sorts of media dvd files, mpgs mp3's no need to burn vcd bin files as this will play them straight off.

I bet your fill your disks quick with your recorded content.. I remember some years back thinking I'll never need a 50gb Hard drive let alone what i have now, seems you can never have enough.

I don't have the latest Winamp, but it (lockups) happens on more than one computer. I have not got around to reinstalling yet.

I already have a Gigabit network, and it doesn't do much for streaming and download speed (limited by hard drive speed), but if you have multiple computers accessing the NAS at the same time then it should help somewhat.

My settings for every one hour mpg2 episode converted to DIVX is about 1gb. 250GB won't take long to fill up!!!!
