Became unresponsive so I went into loft (attic) and the speaker was on continuously. Plugged in monitor and it said
attempt to acces beyond end of device
03:01 rw=0 want=699137280, limit=117242369

with different numbers all down the screen.

Where do I start to diagnose? A reboot and all seems well...

I’ll keep a close eye on temperature. Also make sure there is enough RAM and that the RAM is in fact good. The problem is definitely hardware related.

It could be quite warm, keeping the noise down it has some insulation inside (a proper noise reduction kit). When I rebooted after the message the BIOS reported the AMD K2 500mhz chip at 50c. Not sure how hot that is.

I also have 196MB ram in I think, across 3 modules. If I take all but one out it is 66% less likely to fail I suppose.

Thanks for the tips.

That problem and the SMART monitoring failing appeared to be related to a hardware problem on the K2/500 pc. I "upgraded" to an older K2/350 and working like magic for the last two weeks.

I had problems with my NAS overheating and shutting down completly when it was in the loft, so moved it into the garage and not had a heat issue in 6 months.
