I have recently bought and installed NASLite+v1.4 on an old machine and it works perfectly for the 500Gb of storage attached - distributing DivX and MP3s. Brilliant little program!

I have also (eek!) just bought 4 x 250Gb SATA drives I saw for a "must have" price on eBay, and although I could use them in my main (gaming) PC I would rather use them in a similar set-up to the one above, this time to distribute my collection of DVDs (well the best ones anyway) which I shall rip to the drives. Obviously there's a bit of a snag with NASLite not supporting SATA so that leave me with 2 options:

1. wait until it does support SATA drives (how long?), or
2. find another Linux based program that does it (where do I start!)

Anyone have an opinion or suggestion of where I start (I'm a fully virgin-white Linux N00b!!!)

Thanks Guys (and girls)

Well, you could try re-selling on ebay :)

I'd wait and see what Naslite version 2 brings.

There are lot's of requests for SATA and RAID support in the forums and I know from experience, the 4gb SMB limit is a great example, that Server Elements will try to work in the requests that it's customers ask for. If it's possible to apply SATA support to NASlite then I'm sure it will happen

But also bare in mind that Server Elements is not Microsoft it takes a lot of resources to provide these extra features.

I have no Linux experience other than NASlite so I'm afraid I can't recommend a different Linux system.

Wilbur is right batfink,

I'd keep those Drives. I dont think you will find a solution that is the same as Naslite+ There quite a few Linux CD's that boot straight in and require no installation. But require a little bit more fiddling.. http://www.knoppix.org is one its free and you could try here for futher solutiions. http://www.linux.org/info/wanttouse.html

But the thing is with these CD's is that they load all sorts in to ram.
where as naslite only uses 4mb and naslite 8mb.. impressive.

good luck

thanks guys.

Maybe I'll just build a HTPC instead and use the drives in that :D Hi-Def hopefully.

I'll keep using the NASLite 500Gb machine for distributing Divx & mp3.

I'll say it again.... great program!

you can use H/W based IDE to SATA converter boards, Google for SATA converter, make shure the converter goes in the right direction..SATA-IDE, IDE-SATA. As long its H/W based it should work....if its not to expensive.

Some boards will allow SATA as IDE configuration in the BIOS. There are folks that use SATA drives with NASLite that way, but we have no performance or reliability data, so approach cautiously.
