I may have missed something in looking through prior posts, so here goes:

I want to run NASLite+ on my home network, I have an old PC (P4, 2.4g, 512mb RAM etc) with XP already installed and drives with data already present. I want to dump XP and run NASLite+

My questions are:
1. Will NASLite+ read the pre-loaded drives or I will I lose my data?

2. Can NASLite+ read the partitions setup on the drives or do I need to remove partitions prior to running?

CHeers

Simon

NASLite only reads ext2 formatted drives. If you configure an ntfs or fat drive in naslite, it will repartition it for you. Your data will not survive.

Does that mean if the drive is already formatted as ext2 then the data is safe?

Never tried it, but my expectation would be that the drive would mount. You may or may not have access to the data depending on the file system permissions. Maybe Tony can shed some light on that scenario.

I moved files onto one of my drives once from Slackware, which I also had installed on the machine. I seem to remember NASLite reading the files OK but not being able to delete them. I assume it was because of permissions, I just booted back into Linux and deleting them from there, worked fine.

okay drama solved!

Bought NASLIte+, setup system, moved files to other boxes on the network and and configured NASLite then shuffled it all back etc.

Too bloody easy!!

What a great setup, will add more drives etc to NAS box soon and add rest of media collection,

Can see everything on network from media box in theatre room and stream to digi-proj with no dramas! What a ripper! DVD, MP3 etc all from NAS box to 4 other PC's in house, everyone is happy!
