Thx I will give it a go when I can.
Why would it be a network/hardware problem if I'm only having NFS write problems?
All other servers, and computers are not with any other networking ( mainly AFP with W2k server and SMB with NT4 servers)?
I am about to try a FreeNAS after testing it at home to see how its NFS goes.
Thx again

Post some diskwriggler results, NFS writes are slower, but as you can see from my results, it's nothing negliable.

I'd really like to see and compare your diskwriggler benchmarks to mine.

Well I got around to trying out diskwriggler. Now I am confused???

Write Summary : 300.00 frames in 409.23 secs
: 0.68(min) 0.73(avg) 0.74(max) FPS
: 8.29(min) 8.91(avg) 8.99(max) MB/s

Read Summary : 300.00 frames in 455.09 secs
: 0.61(min) 0.66(avg) 0.67(max) FPS
: 7.47(min) 8.01(avg) 8.09(max) MB/s

This looks like a good speed via the Terminal but there is no way I'm getting this via the finder.

NASLite computer is
AMD 900MHz
384 MB ram
Disk-3 is a 80Gb seagate 8Mb cache(nothing special).
Conected via Intel 550 series 24 port switch
Netgear NIC at 100 full duplex.

I only did it via the switch as I don't have time atm to disconnect for a direct connect.

I can't think of anything to try now.
Can anyone?
Thx

After talking to a friend at Apple, apparently the finder in OSX is the culprit, apparently it doesn't utilize the entire bandwidth available in network copying.

Any thing I could try?
I could write a applescript to drag and drop a file onto, but this is a bit of a pain.

I can't belive there is no hack I could try.
I'm about to get the FreeNAS going, so I guess I will get the same results :(
Guess I might have to wait till there is a AFP NAS around.

I'd be really interested to hear how you get on with FreeNAS. I tried it and couldn't get it to boot at all.

Well I have installed FreeNAS 0.64b
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownote ... _id=403034
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=403034

It is still a early BETA but it has AFP support :D :D :D :D
and it works great with any OSX. Still a few small things (have to use IP address atm, can't browse for it yet) but its a start. No more NFS for me I hope.
I did find that 10.4.5 increased the speed for NFS, but still not a fast as via the terminal, but also 10.4.5 is having SMB login problems now :(.
AFP to the rescue.
Won't stop the NASLite yet, but I don't think SE are interested in AFP support (well got zero feed back about it). I think FreeNAS might replace NASLite+ in a few more versions. Time will tell.

Hi all,

I am having the same problem connecting with nfs and smb.

a bit of history

G5
Tiger latest
NASLite+ for USB v1.4

I have been using NASLite in various incarnations for over a year now. It always worked flawlessly.

I have 2 users on my machine.

- The main user (me) has no problem connecting to all disks in either nfs or smb, automation or manually.

- The second user was added a few months ago. Connection to disks is achieved through automation by an Applescript launched at login, although connecting through "Connect to server..." Finder menu does not work (I get the same error message mentioned at the beginning of this thread).

So to sum up, of the two users on my G5, one can access NASLite disks in nfs with no problem, the other can do so only when the script is executed, but not by making use of the "Connect to server..." menu.

Due to relocation of my G5 to my new music studio, I am setting up an old iBook G3 500 to be our new household computer.

I haven't been able to connect it to the NASLite box with nfs. Smb worked, but only by accessing smb://192.168.0.20 first, then choosing the disk and OK with no password. Direct access smb://192.168.0.20/export/disk-1 (or other) denied.

I have tried the minauth fix, repaired permissions, no change.

Last resort will be upgrading NASLite to v1.5 (I have DL'd the update quite a while ago, but haven't come round to installing it yet), is there any reason to think doing so would fix the problem?

And of all people mentioning problems at the beginning of this thread, have any managed to fix the problem?

Any help/comment much appreciated.

NASLite upgraded to v1.5

No change.

Unable to access NAS box disks with nfs.
It is however possible to connect via Applescript (for some reason). See my post HERE for the Connect To applescript.
