Hello all, this is a problem that's been going on for a while but now is worse, as in I can't get to my files on my server machine because XP can't see NASLite+ in explorer. This means I can't add or delete any files to the server machine.

When I use Telnet on the XP machine, I can log in as administrator and even make changes on the server machine.

I can ping the router and the NIC in the server machine successfully.

XP says there is no network path available. What's going on?

Thanks for any help.

G'day
I'm not very good with computers but I had to map the drives on my naslite+ server before xp would see them.
had to give xp the ip address and domain as well as the workgroup and name of the drive ( rather daunting for a Newbie )

hope this helps

sirwoodrow, see that's just it...IP, domain and workgroup were given at original install! Everything worked fine and then all of a sudden, BAM! it's all gone. (pretty nice dramatic effect, huh?)

I can still see the drive icon in Win explorer, just can't see the files. (this is viewed under "My Network Places" where it says the computer is "Unknown")

I should also mention the NIC for the server machine is a second installed card (in the Win XP machine) so as to keep the server away from the internet router.

it might be a routing issue then.

Check you can ping the box by

ping IPADDRESS

then

ping SERVERNAME

these should both work

if that works

go to start then run and type

\\IPADDRESS\

and then

\\SERVERNAME\

these should bring up the shares in this box.

Sorry if i missed somnething or are leading you down the wrong road but at least its something to check ;)

Yeesss! :D When I used \\ipaddress\ it brought up the shares in the box. As I'm sure you know there were my folders and files! :D This also put an icon in "My Network Places", which now works fine. I deleted the old icons, since they still don't work.

Fantastic help fat! Thanks! My question is: what happened? If I could always ping to the server, why could'nt XP see the files/make the connection?

there is a simple answer and a complicated one.

Essentially when you type or browse to a file share by name you are using NETBIOS to resolve the names i.e. it is working out what IP address windows should use to talk to the box in the background. This works pretty much all of the time but it can get confused for many many reasons.

But if it works now then cool ;) glad i could help

OK, I have to ask another question about a related problem. Now I can get to the server as stated before, but now I can't copy anything to the folders.

I'm getting an error message that says "Access is denied" and "Disk is full or write-protected". The disk has plenty of room! Is this a Win XP problem?
Thanks for any help. :)
