I have been using the server suite ofr a while and love it!!!

However I have often thought just how safe is the server from prying eyes. Inside my house I do not care, but can someone peer in from the outside? The server is behind a router so there is some level of safety, but on my XP machine I have Kerio firewall for added security. Can someone from the outside get into the NASLite box? Obviously there is no Kerio on it.

thanks

I gave my NAS an IP address just outside the range of my routers DHCP server.
As a result it can not connect to the internet, my router blocks that completly
Visa versa, I "believe" no outside connection can reach the NAS

Well, that depends on your router...the NASlite is open to everyone on your net. You can check if anyone can "see" your server by testing it on Gibsons page: http://www.grc.com , try Shields Up and maybe LeakTest
It will tell you if anyone can connect to you from the outside.

There is probably other similar tests. Google for it.

If your network is wired only, then the chances are slim at best so long as your tests at grc.com come back positive. If however you have mixed wired/wireless or solely wireless, then if your encryption is cracked by a guy sat outside your gaff in a car, you've crashed and burned. Poorly secured wireless is a backdoor into any wired network.

We do not use wireless and grc says all 1056 ports ok. So I am not gonna worry.

If you are on a NAT, and most people are, then you are OK.
