I am having a problem getting to the first, default admin on NASLite+

Computer:
Old, weird Gateway motherboard w/ P200, 48M RAM
hda - 120G Western Digital
hdc - 60G Maxtor
hdd - 60G Western Digital
CD ROM is SCSI

Had some original problems with booting because of floppy settings in the BIOS. I was able to boot from CD ROM and log onto the admin using the standard admin/nas. Couldn't save configs so I had to start over.

After getting the floppy situation working I now have a different problem: the NASLite system boots, checks the drives and launches the system but I can't log on as the admin. admin/nas are incorrect.

I have erased all the drives giving them one partition formated to ext2 (tried with no partitions too) with no luck. everything 'seems' to load correctly but I can't config anything or see the computer via telnet, http etc.

Any ideas?

If the floppy disk in the floppy disk drive is not a valid configuration floppy disk, then NASLite+ will lock you out.

Take a look here http://www.serverelements.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=143.

Also, make sure you read the manual. It explains everything about proper NASLite+ setup and administration.

There is no floppy in the drive. I've read the manual and the forum.

Here's a quick rundown:
1. Boot computer (drives are 'off' in BIOS) FLoppy is listed as first boot device but no floppy in drive
2. NASLight+ boots from SCSI CD ROM
3. NASLight Kernal loads
4. Looks like everything is loading, drives are identified
5. There are some errors regarding an unfound password (/etc/??) and the network (my subnet is not 192.168.1.1 ??)
6. The standard NAS Light+ 'home' screen pops up indicating that everything is successful except identification of hdc (don't have a drive there)
7. When I attempt to logon with admin/nas it tells me that the logon was incorrect

Now, it seems that there is an improper boot situation as there should be no attempted identification of the harddrives on initial boot. The system appears to have been set-up and configs saved with a new logon but that's impossible.

Let me know if you need more details regarding the kernal boot process messages, I can get them but it will take a number of reboots to catch them all.

Hm! :?:

As NASLite+ is booting, scan through the kernel messages and look for:

Code:
Floppy drive(s): fd0 is XYZ

what's shown for XYZ?

It appears that NASLite+ is reading bogus config data from fd0. Now the question is "Why?" if you don't have a disk in the floppy drive.

A faulty floppy drive can also cause that, so if you have a spare floppy drive, try that too.

Let me know how it goes.

bingo

on a hunch I checked the floppy drive - bad cable-
the pins for the connector had started seperating from the cable itself

replaced the floppy cable and it started up as it should

thanks for the help,

b
