It appears at first reading that V2 only supports SCSI and Serial ATA RAID configurations. I hope that this not the case!

Are there any Parallel ATA RAID controllers that will work? I sure hope so, as I have purchased a number of 300GB PATA drives specifically for use with NASLite. Please advise. Thanks.

As long as the controller is real "hardware" raid. NASLite-2 does not, and will never, support software raid.

Check 3ware they have some PATA hardware raid controllers.

Thanks Ralph, I will take a look.

I was hoping for support for Promise Technology controllers (which are true hardware RAID) since they offer Linux drivers for their products. I have a number of their cards in machines that I have built and they have always worked well.

What model Promise controllers do you have?

Anyone tried the CompUSA brand PATA/ SATA controllers with Version 2.0?

I'm hoping to find out if the Highpoint 454 or 464 are compatible... They are the only 8 drive RAID controller within my price range right now :( They supply Linux drivers, I'm not sure if that means anything...

I can't really afford to go out and buy a controller and the software only to find out they wont work togther...

Thanks in advance for any help or advice

EDIT: I had a look at the linux compatability page... HPT370/372 is supported but not HPT374... Which is what the 454 and 464 use :(

EDIT: So now I'm looking at 3Ware... There is no way I can afford a new 7506-8... So I'm looking at a second hand 7850 or 7500-8... The linux compatability page specifically mentions the 7506-8 but not the 7850 / 7500-8... However it does talk about the 7000 series cards... Has anyone had any experience with these cards?

Hi - Im running a 3ware 7006-2 in RAID 1 right now without any apparent issues. From what I can see it appears to be working as it should...although at this point I haven't looked at the BIOS array verification settings to check yet.

I have just upgrade my 1.5 NAslite to 2.0. I would very much like to put in Raid 5.

My motherboard is an old Celeron board.

Can anyone recommend a RAID card for me to try?

Cheers
Warren

One of the 3ware cards are a good bet. Try Ebay and do a search for 3ware.

I believe that my motherboard is only 32 bit PCI not 64. Are any of these 3ware cards compatable?

I am running a 3ware 7006-2 in RAID 1, without any problems. The card is running in a 32 bit PCI slot.

Last night, I unplugged one of the drives to see if NASLite-2 would report the missing drive. The only message I found was in the syslog file, something about the 3ware card running in a degraded mode. I was hoping for a more apparent notification / alarm. I then reconnected the drive, rebooted the computer, entered the 3ware bios, instructed it to rebuild the RAID, and press F8. NASLite-2 booted, again I looked for a message about the RAID state, after about hour an entry appeared in the syslog file about RAID being restored.

Is there a more obvious way to check on the RAID state?

My fear is, if one drive was to fail with RAID, I might never know about it until a second drive fails and it is too late!

Thanks,

I checked the 3ware wesites and it appears that the card will work in either a 32bit slot or 64bit slot.

I will give it a go and let you know how I get on.

I've also been told previously that PCI-X cards, such as 3Ware, will work in standard PCI slots, although at a reduced rate...

It's good to hear that others are sucessfully using 3Ware cards with NASLite2 :)

Thanks for your replies

Hardware RAID cards have optimized card-specific firmware. As such, hardware RAID tends to be very diligent in monitoring the drives and their state. In addition, hardware RAID cards have on-board alarms that are designed specifically for the purpose. If you have a drive failure, that card will likely be screaming louder than you’d care to listen. At that point, you can refer to the syslog for some clues before corrective action.

Some do, some don't - I've come across quite a few Adaptec hardware RAID cards that have no audible alarms - the embedded Adaptec SATA "host raid" in the IBM xSeries 206 that I currently use as a file/print server doesn't.
