What triggers the need for a new Unlock Code?

I've been running NASLite-2 for about three hours, and so far I'm on my 3rd unlock code. And that's with NO changes to my hardware configuration.

The first time, the only thing I changed was to add journalling (ext2 to ext3) to my hard drives that were previously formatted in NASLite+.

The 2nd time, I moved the NASLite box to a different location on my network (on a different switch, but of course on the same subnet).

Getting a new Unlock Code isn't that hard, but this seems to be a bit much. I thought the intention was that a fundamental change in system hardware (other than drives) would be required to trigger the need for a new code.

I've found moving hardware from one PCI slot to another requies a new unlock code which can be pain when your trying to test a piece of hardware (I,m on my 4th unlock code in under 1 hour of testing!)
As I understand it, the reason behind the unlock code is to prevent the NASLite-2 software being installed on a different computer - similar to Microsoft Activation.
Why doesn't the software allow for moving hardware to different PCI slots within the registered computer like MS Activation? Seems like overkill to me.
Incidentally, I've noticed that removing a piece of hardware creates an identical unlock code generated prior to installing that piece of hardware

Is there a limit to the number of unlock codes you're allowed?

The unlock code is generated against the system ID. The system ID, in turn, is generated against the License ID and networking hardware. If you change the NIC or it’s IRQ, etc., a new system ID will be generated.

There is no limit to the number of unlock codes one can generate. All we ask is that people be honest and not run a single copy of NASLite-2 on 50 different computers as is the case with Version 1.X.

So what's the point of the unlock code then?

Its primary purpose is to attempt and keep you honest. As a side effect of that, we can continue development and keep the cost of the product low.
