The ability to isolate marginal disk blocks and "just never use them".
SMART was supposed to eliminate this problem? By actively replacing bad blocks with spares. But it seems that would only work if disk manufacturers had no incentive to keep their warranty costs down. By gaming that block replace decision. Time after time I've seen block requiring multiple bad reads before the internal controller marks them as bad...and ready for replacement during the next write.
Instead of this mess, I'd like to see product which marks blocks after the very first read error.
MHDD will show you such blocks - but it doesn't seem to make them go away.
