A few moments ago, my NASLite-2 box started playing 3 high-tones followed by 3 low-tones about once every minute. According to the manual, this indicates CHECK DISK - Fixed disk drive fails overall SMART self-assessment. When I look at the disk status page, it shows:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 035 035 036 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 2689

I don't see any other obvious trouble indications anywhere else on the page.

I'm guessing this means I should replace the drive, but how long do I have before it conks out? Should I drop everything and race over to Office Depot or Tiger Direct, or can this wait a few days? And can I simply image the existing drive onto a new drive with something like Norton Ghost and have the NAS continue on as usual? This is Disk-0, and is the only drive in there.

Or is there some sort of self-repair that can be done to the existing drive so I don't have to replace it?

----addendum:

it is now showing:

5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 028 028 036 Pre-fail Always FAILING_NOW 2950

That is, the first two numbers have dropped lower than originally. What happens if and when those hit 00?

Anyway, I am going to shut the machine off now.

Go buy a new hard drive NOW and install it next to the dying one. Format it (be sure to format the NEW drive ;) ) and make it read/writable.

From any other computer on your network, go to the shared folder and copy the old disk to the new one. Wait, wait wait wait...

Format the OLD drive and bring it to a recycling spot. May want to "deep clean" it in another computer if you had personal data on it.
