I've been playing around with Snapraid over the last month have come to like it a lot.

http://snapraid.sourceforge.net/

But while it will nominally handle CIFS drives, *effective* use really requires block access....as in these old NDAS units (now defunct) which utilize a propropietary ATA over ethernet protocol. Accordingly, if NASlite supported ATAoE....that would probably address the problem, and enable many of us to make use of this "economy" ZFS.

Really don't know how difficult it might be to add ATAoE to Naslite, and will admit the crazy prices Coraid pins to their products has me concerned.
