Server #1
Raid 1 on Adaptec hardware raid card - with 2 500G Hard drives. = NAS Disk-1

Server #2
1TB SATA Hard Drive that mirrors server 1's Disk-1 every night.

==========================
Failure scenarios
==========================

Fire = total data loss
Either hard drive of RAID array dies, replace hard drive = no data loss
Both hard drives of RAID die or volume is corrupt. Fix / replace RAID and copy from backup = 1 days data loss
Backup Drive Dies, replace drive = no data loss
Adaptec Raid card fails, replace with another adaptec card (any adaptec card should work right?) = no data loss

Is there something I am missing? I want to make damn sure I'm never going to loss my data unless there is a fire. And to protect from that i'm thinking of moving Server #2 into the garage, which would most likely survive a fire

Get a blueray burner or DLT and do weekly backups if you are paranoid.

Otherwise you would seem to have it covered.

Just a small question (but VERY important !) : Are Servers 1 & 2 in the same place / apartment ? In case of fire or burglary, you're dead (data wise).

Always put at least 10km between data and back-ups.

Robrub,

"FireĀ = total data loss"

I thank that is in fact the case and it appears that he accepted the fact.

In my book, fire = no more than 1 day's data loss (thus, the need of putting big distances between data and back-up) ;)

Totally agree with you. His run down recognized the possibility of loss should he have a fire. My music collection is backed up by giving copies to friends in different states to hold, hows that for paranoid?

I love the excuse for giving away the music to friends ;) ;) ;)

"No your honor, I was not cheating the music companies, but doing my paranoid back-up"

Yes, real cool :)

LOL, dick! :?

We both have about 90% the same music with both of us having ripped most of it to MP3 years ago for convenience of listening. The little that doesn't cross over is the only concern. More of a simple way to save our selves the work re ripping the music should one or the other loose their drives to a catastrophic disaster.

Little to no nefarious intent on our part. In fact we have Netflix and Pandora subscriptions. I also usually order a CD of any music I get an MP3 of and like so as to support the artists continued efforts. If I don't like it it goes to the bit bucket. To be honest there is little that the music and movie companies are bringing out over the last decade or so that I feel any real need to own a copy of. Exceptions being the likes of say the Shins, Mumford and sons, Donald Fagen, or Mark Knopfler. All deserve to have their work supported and I do. Most movies now suck so we prefer to rent via Netflix.
