I have WD 1TB Drive. It used to show up just fine. Now suddenly it won't show up at all.

Here is my server log.. Can anyone read this and tell me why my external drive is not being displayed in the storage configuration menu?

Was about to say take the drive out of the enclosure and try it in the NAS directly. USB drives suck, just don't do them unless you have no other viable option.

Hi Mike

Do you mean not to use them under NL or in general ? All my back-ups are on USB 3.0 disks and they work (for the moment) quite well under windows...

They are generally not built to the same standards as most drives from my experiences. I have a friend that has like 20+ of the things and they are failing all the time on him. He has to use a recovery tool that hits the drive every way to sunday to get the data off of the platters. This is about a day and a half process and a real pain. most of the USB drives are the low end consumer units so reliability is not that good. If they are working for you then great, just far from optimal.

You can buy cheap chassis with 4 port eSATA switches on them for cheap, add in good drives like the WD Red series or the Seagate NS series and you have reliable and fast storage.

Yep, I agree with you but I have to bring them home and back to work everyday... I keep one drive at home and the other goes to work. The next day, it is the other way around. 2 1/2 USB drives ARE very practical for this ;) I'll keep in mind their fragility and check them more often.

FYI, I also have copies of the data on other internal drives also. I think that I have enough copies in different places to sleep well :)

Thanks for your insight and counsel.

Regards

Robby

You know if your internet is fast enough you could simply use a VPN to access a target store on your NAS and save your self the hassle of the drive shuffle.

Great idea ! Tnx. The internet is OK (ADSL line around 1200 Kbps upload) but not the speed of fiber yet. I'll have to look for a NAS for my home with a VPN service. QNAP TS series, Synology DS series, Netgear ReadyNAS series... Any ideas ? It will be a pity not to use NL but I have medical information and the data must be protected during copy and for the access.

I wonder if NL can do the copy automatically... Rsynch but to the home NAS ? I suppose "yes" but not via VPN; I'll need to leave a"free" access to the NAS :(

Hmmm. Nice puzzle to solve :)

Look at putting a smoothwall at both ends, it is a very good firewall and has an encrypted open VPN built in as well.
