Hi

I've been "bitten" several times with the delay needed to check the file system at boot time.

Would it be possible to do the file system check (at the same intervals as before) but at shut down? One can turn off the server and quit the computer and let it finish checking the disks alone and boot rapidly the next time. I have 3 disks in the server and it takes time (even if the disks are not checked at the same time) when I need rapidly the server (I use it for my office).

What do you think? Do you vote for it? Is it technically possible ?

Regards

Robby

we have been here before - i add my vote - theres a discussion from a while ago on this - every argument was put forward for this not to happen - all good i have to say - but i said then [i believe] that it should be a user choice - if there is risk then ok - as long as the user knows that they can choose to set it or not

I can personally see no issue with it as long as the facility to run a check at start up is maintained in situations of a disorderly shut down or power loss. In my case I have little issue with it because my NAS runs 24/7 and I seldom reboot it.

As usual, you are right ;) If a bad shutdown occurred, it is logical to check everything before mounting the drives at boot time. On the other hand, when the 180 days or every X mounts has triggered, it would be easy (and much better) to unmount the drives at shutdown and then do the disk / files checking.

I turn down the server every Friday night and turn it on Monday morning.

+1 on this user-selectable feature. :)
