try disabling the drives in the bios - naslite does not need bios settings for the drives - plus make sure everything you dont need/want is turned off in the bios

OK, my latest investigations include:-

Use of only 1 disk unit and tried the disks separately on different Sata ports.

I have disabled the config on the disks before reloading the system onto the single disk, then formatted that disk, after reload the disk remains unmounted.

Tried running the system from the CD and still not joy doing the same as above.

How do i disable the drives in the BIOS, the only thing i can do is disable the sata ports?

Thx

John

Update on this .

I managed to get hold of a piece of software that would allow me to completely "Clean" my disk, so no chance of any previous Configuration files etc.

Loaded the Disk and did an install selected option 1 for system and storage. After the system loaded i rebooted and then formated Disk 0, then rebooted again.

After reboot Disk zero still showing as Not Mounted, so no storage media.

Nothing more to ry at the moment.

you certainly seem to be having problems

do you want to post a step by step of what you are doing - would be happy to try it on a system - hardware would not be the same but i would hope that would not matter as long as its a sata drive etc

Ok I will go through the process and post another respond, but before i do that i am using a piece of software called active@killdisk that allows me to "clean: the disks of any data and it also gets rid of any existing partitions.

Earlier today i "cleaned" disk 0 and with this disk connected as the only storage media i reloaded NS from CD, i then formated Disk 0 in an attempt to get storage allocated, which did not happen.

Later i attached the second disk to my system and ran the disk "clean " utility again on this disk, then restarted NS from the other fixed disk Disk0. Then i formatted the new disk1 and saved the config before rebooting, after reboot i still have no disks mounted.

But then i booted the system with this "Clean" disk cd and it gave the following inforation about the 2 disks and the partitions on them

Disk 0

Naslite
Unallocated 15.69MB
Primary Unknown 298.1 GB
Unallocated 2.49MB

Disk 1

Primary Unknown 2981GB

The thing that strikes me as odd is how can both disks have Primary partitions of 298.1GB?

Maybe one of the Forum specialists can advise on whether this partition information seems OK

Thanks

John

dont know on the disc size but i have come across the problem of naslite sitting in a partition even though you think you have deleted it - theres a post somewhere on here - will see if i can find it - it can also get confusing if you have or have had naslite on more than one drive and they are both in the system - it can boot from one drive and save the config data to the other drive

i had better add thats how i remember it as its a while since i had the problem

am not sure the software you are using is doing what you shink - yes its cleaning the data but maybe not the boot block or the naslite partition

its better to put the drive on a windows system - it will recognise the naslite partition but cannot read it - you can then remove all the partitions and format it to NTFS - thats usually enough to make sure everything is gone from the drive

another way is to boot a system with a Linux distro and clean the partitions

no that s not it although i do remember that conversation - the points i remember is

work with one drive - if you try to install on a drive - then on a second one within the same system naslite gets confused so make sure each drive is clean of anything that may have been installed

even if you do that always de install - cannot remember their term - but one of the options on the install - de configure or whatever

i think??? your problem is that you have multiple installs on one or more discs - clean them as i said above - that should sort it

Ok,

What follows is a blow by blow (or keyboard stroke by stroke) event when i try to install and use Naslite on my AMD based system which has 2 sata drives and uses an ASUS M2N4 -SL1 motherboard.

The 2 drives in the system have previously been used as follows:-

Disk 0 erased and loaded with Ubuntu Linux Distro
Disk 1 erased with nothing configured on the drive...no partitions.

* Rebooted system with Naslit X64 CD in drive.
* Selected i to do an install of Naslite
* Admin
* 2 Install
* 1 System and storage --- standard Install
* Enter Continue
* R Reboot
* Y Yes
* Enter Continue
* Passwords etc
* admin
* nas
* 3 Storage
* 0 Not Mounted (Boot/Config Device)
* R Return
* 1 Not Mounted
* 8 Format Drive 1
* Y Continue
* Format Complete (Filesystem = ext 3)
* R return
* R Return
* 9 Save Configuration
* Y
* R Continue
* 7 Reboot
* Y Yes
* New Boot ....
* Admin
* Nas
* 3 Storage
* 0 Not Mounted
* R Return
* 1 Not Mounted

hope the above makes sense

Thanks

John

Are the disks being exported? Option 1 should be marked as RW in the disk configuration. Default is not mounted.

DISK-1 CONFIGURATION MENU

Disk Model: LSI MegaRAID 8888ELP, v.1.20
Interface: DEVICE-SDB, HOST-0, BUS-2, TARGET-1, LUN-0
Status: DISK IS MOUNTED!
Usage: 1.8T / 189.9G / 1.6T / 10% - ( Size / Used / Free / Used% )

1 - Export Disk-1 [ RW ] (RW, RO, --)
2 - Set Disk-1 Capacity Alarm [ 95 ] (75, 80, 85, 90, 95, 99, --)
* - Set Disk-1 S.M.A.R.T. [ -- ] (ON, --)
* - Run Disk-1 Extended S.M.A.R.T. Self-Test
5 - Check Disk-1 Filesystem
* - Check and Repair Disk-1 Filesystem
7 - Apply Journal to Disk-1 Filesystem
8 - Format Disk-1
9 - Mirror to Disk-1 from [ NONE ]

R - Return To Storage Configuration Menu

Hi,

Disk 1 was not set up as you suggested, so i changed it, then saved the configuration.

Rebooted

Disk 1 still not mounted.

Thanks

Hello John,

Your last post, in reply to Ralph, is somewhat puzzling, so I'll try and walk through it again.

I'll assume that in it's current state, the server does not export any one of the two drives you have installed. You are booting off of Disk-0, and intend to store data on Disk-0 and Disk-1. With that in mind let's do the following:

1. Boot the server and enter the admin console.
2. Enter Option-3 Storage Configuration
3. From the Storage Configuration menu, enter Option-0. That will be your boot/config drive.
4. From the Disk-0 menu, select Option-8 to format. That will format the storage partition and NOT affect the boot/config facilities.
5. With format complete, Option-1 Export Disk-0 will be enabled. Select [RW] and any other items you wish to set at this time.
6. Use Option-R to return back to Storage Menu
7. From the Storage Configuration menu, enter Option-1 for Disk-1.
8. From the Disk-1 menu, select Option-8 to format.
9. With format complete, Option-1 Export Disk-1 will be enabled. Select [RW] and any other items you wish to set at this time.
10. Use Option-R to return back to Storage Menu
11. Use Option-R to return back to Main Menu
12. Option-7 to reboot

After reboot, enter admin and verify that the export options for Disk-0 and Disk-1 are both still set as [RW]. With that being the case you should be ready to access the server for storage.

Hope that helps.

Tony.
